It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of a beloved member of our community and the AWAKE family. On Friday, May 22, we lost Roy Martinez.
Roy was a friend, a brother, a son, and someone who brought compassion to every room and every person he encountered. A proud Queens kid, Roy carried himself with a rare gentleness, humility, and kindness. He was deeply creative, endlessly passionate about the city that raised him, and devoted to the people and communities that shaped him.
There are truly no words for the grief and shock our team is feeling right now. Out of respect for Roy and to allow our team time to mourn, AWAKE NY will remain closed through the weekend and will reopen Wednesday, May 27. In the meantime, we welcome anyone who would like to stop by the store to visit the ofrenda and pay their respects.

A vigil and celebration of life in Roy’s honor will take place this Monday, May 27 from 3PM until late at the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Park. All friends are welcome.
