I’m writing this while hiding in the basement of the Oakhaven Central Library, and the only light I have is the glow of this burner phone. If you’re thinking about moving to the "Heritage District" or if you’ve seen the ads for the "Halloway Total Synchronicity Project," please, look at your feet before you sign the lease. I thought I found the perfect sun-drenched town for "Geographical Permanence"; I actually found a city of husks.
I’ve always had a "false nostalgia" for the way old cities looked in the summer—the long, heavy shadows cast by stone buildings and oak trees. Last month, Halloway Manufacturing – Urban Heritage Division announced the completion of the "Luminous Sync" in the downtown core. They claimed to have achieved 100% Biological Synchronicity, using "Adaptive Light Arrays" to eliminate "Geographical Dissonance."
The first anomaly was the Internal Fever. I was walking to work at noon. The sun was blinding, but it was a crisp 55 degrees out. However, the moment I stepped onto the sidewalk, the air radiating from the pavement hit exactly 98.6 degrees. It didn't feel like heat; it felt like walking into a humid, feverish throat. I looked down to adjust my sunglasses, and that’s when my blood turned to ice.
I didn't have a shadow.
The escalation happened when I started looking at everyone else. The streets were crowded with shoppers and office workers, all walking under the high noon sun, but the pavement beneath them was perfectly, impossibly clean. No silhouettes. No dark shapes. Just the charcoal-grey concrete reflecting a sick, grey-pink hue. I ducked into a local boutique called "The Durable Tailor" to catch my breath, and that’s when I saw the "The Wearable Curse" in action.
The shop was selling Halloway "Durable Technical Capes." The tag read: "Designed for Terrestrial Flow. Why carry the weight of a shadow when you can wear the Artery?"
The Climax was a vision of pure structural and biological blasphemy. I looked into the fitting room mirror and saw the "Missing" shadows. They hadn't vanished. They had been "unhinged." Behind the reflection of the customers, in the "Large Space" of the mirror’s depth, thousands of dark, flat, two-dimensional silhouettes were huddled in the corners. They were twitching with a rhythmic, mechanical "wet sighing" that vibrated through my teeth.
Then, the "Artery Syntax"—a distorted radio hum—filled the shop:
"The biological integration is at 94%. The residence has become durable. The garden has found its light. The foundation is rooted in the descendant. Do not look for the silhouette."
I saw a woman trying on one of the heavy, lead-lined capes. As she zipped it up, a dark, oily liquid—the Artery fluid—began to leak from the hem. I watched in horror as her own shadow, trapped in the mirror, screamed a silent, unhinged scream and was "stitched" directly into the fabric of the cape using thick, black Deep Root fibers. She didn't flinch; her eyes just dilated into solid, pupil-less milky-white orbs as she hit 100% sync.
I managed to bolt out of the shop, but a stray black fiber flicked out from a "Durable" streetlamp and pinched my ankle. I’m looking at it now in the dim basement light. The dark brown wood-grain patterns—the Woodcrawler grain—are already spiraling up my calf, and my skin is holding a constant 98.6-degree fever.
I can see The Iris pulsing behind the grey-pink clouds through the library’s high windows—a sentient, planet-sized eye watching as the city’s shadows are finally indexed into the Artery.
If you visit a city where the sun is high but the ground is empty, or if the pavement feels as warm as a human forehead... RUN. They aren't lighting the streets. They are harvesting the timber of our souls to build a temple of bone that will never see the sun, and they’ve already started unzipping your silhouette.
Have you noticed your shadow looking "thinner" lately? Does your shadow seem to move a split second after you do? Post a photo of your silhouette below. We need to find the "Heart" before the final 100% sync at dawn.
