From around the 1870s onward, companies began inserting small scraps of silk or flannel, printed with collectible illustrations, into to***co packaging. Frequently these “to***co silks” were printed in a series: types of butterflies or flags, athletes or actors, colleges and universities.

These charming printed scraps were collected, especially by women, who used them in a variety of home crafts. To***co silk pillows and quilts are common from throughout the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

The Equestrian Patch Dress and Long Sleeve Shirt feature reproductions of 19th-century to***co silks, including horses, barns, and cowboy and cowgirl motifs. The patches are appliquéd onto a pink silk ground and framed with sequins. Now available in stores and online.

A few of my favorite T-shirts from my treasured collection for ginza magazine. My collection spans from 1920’s undershirts to contemporary pieces, reflecting more than a century of everyday clothing. The tees I return to most are the ones that carry a personal history—shirts passed down from my mother and aunt, gifts from friends, souvenirs from events, and pieces worn almost to their end by someone before me, each their own kind of time capsule.

Born on a ranch in Red Lodge, Montana, Alice Greenough was one of the first women to become a saddle bronc rider. Throughout her storied career, she rode broncos and performed feats of trick riding at rodeos around the world, including stunt work in various Hollywood productions. She and her siblings, Marge Greenough and Turk Greenough, also prizewinning bronc and bull riders, gained the nickname “The Riding Greenoughs” throughout the 1930s and 1940s.

For her outstanding abilities and pioneering spirit—Greenough continued riding broncs on her own rodeo circuit after women were banned from the sport—Alice was the first woman to be inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 1975. She is also a member of the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Rodeo Hall of Fame.
