Meet the Crew: Stephanie Suzadail - Flight Registered Nurse
“A Flight Registered Nurse is a role that combines the skills of a paramedic and a nurse, bringing ICU medicine out of the hospital and into the field…involving transporting patients via ground, helicopter, or fixed-winged aircraft.
I went to night school while I was in high school, to learn to be an EMT, and loved it…I got exposed to flight nurses after a very bad car accident where we had multiple pediatric patients become injured and had to bring multiple aircraft in to fly them out…seeing the calm demeanor, the proficiency, you feel calmer when a flight crew walks in.
When I was 23 I was in nursing school. And I had been treated for a stroke and flown to a nearby hospital. The particular agency that flew me, just took such good care of me…I very much wanted to be that for somebody else and pay it forward…A couple years later, I wanted more advanced stuff - to learn different things that my agency currently wasn’t doing. Remarkably, I joined another agency, and my first flight with them was on the exact helicopter that flew me as a stroke patient.
I’m humbled to be able to do this. I do some really high speed medicine with my friends. And how humbling it is when you help somebody, who’s really sick, really injured, and save their lives. The impact they, in turn, make on the world. I love hearing stories of what people do after the fact, the organizations they start, the volunteering they do. It’s just something we need to see more of in the world, it is very heartening.”
