My favorite summer read: Malcolm in the Desert by Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz.

More than a biography, it’s a reflection on Malcolm X’s spiritual transformation following his pilgrimage to Mecca, and the evolution of a man whose willingness to grow is often overshadowed by the icon he became.

It was a pleasure to hear Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz in conversation with Spike Lee, whose 1992 film Malcolm X introduced a new generation to Malcolm’s life and legacy.

The ancient Greek goddess of love, beauty, desire, and creative power. She embodies the power of attraction as presence, reminding us that beauty begins with how we see ourselves and extends outward into the world.

Aphrodite speaks to the force that draws us toward one another and toward ourselves. She reminds us that beauty is something to be embodied.

Inspired by this daily ritual, the Lotus brings together symbolism and sculptural form in a study of illumination, renewal, and presence.

OLONA

Named after the Malagasy word for “human being,” Olona reflects an enduring fascination with the human face as a vessel of identity, memory, and presence.

Inspired by the sculptural forms of Sukuma masks and translated into hand-woven raffia, the Olona explores the ways we recognize ourselves and one another across generations, cultures, and time.

For this latest iteration, the form has evolved to introduce a stronger architectural presence, balancing structure with movement through its expressive silhouette and cascading fringe.
