Happy Earth Day, humans! I love Earth Day because it forces us to stop and actually pay attention to her. When the boys were little, it meant planting something together in the dirt. Now that they’re older, I encouraged them to pick up any trash they spot in the grass on the way to school. I’m trying to do the same on my walk to work.

The big gestures matter (donate, reduce, rethink), but so do the small ones. There’s a kind of poetry in tending your own little patch of the planet as a love letter back to her. For me in NYC, that means coaxing my tiny patio into a chorus of yellow tulips this spring (optimism people! scroll for photos).

A favorite recurring text of mine. .diary started spotting these protest signs on the El Curtola Boulevard overpass above Highway 24 in Lafayette, California, and they are very LF-coded. They make me smile every single time she sends one.

They used to lean MAGA, but lately they’ve very clearly shifted in the opposite direction.

Does anyone know who’s behind them? And more importantly, which one is your favorite?
