Design by Draping has always been one of my favourite things to do! It allows the fabric to tell me what it can be, it’s a collaboration. Therefore, it’s always a treat when I get to collaborate with others on such a project to create a larger story. Here I worked with opera singer Jennifer Rowley, makeup artist Melissa Brown and photographer Matthew Holler. We used Jen’s upcoming roles this season as inspiration - Turandot, Lady MacBeth and Madame Butterfly.
Here are development and final images of Turandot - the others will post over the next couple of days to keep you guessing 😉

This Friday will see the release of Dexter:Resurrection
I headed up the tailor shop on this show with one of the best crews I’ve had the pleasure of working with.
It was always fun wondering what you would encounter as you walked through the prop staging area each day - photos to come!
Until then - mark your calendars!

New city, new secrets. Michael C. Hall is back in Dexter: Resurrection, premiering July 11th on the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME plan. ...

The dogs of Severance!
On this long, long job, our shop dogs kept everyone sane. Ella, Parker and Bruno hung out with us in the tailor/dye shop where folks would stop by for some emotional support. We couldn’t have done it without them!

The Goats of Severance!
Everyone wants to know what the goats mean to the plot of Severance. Between season 1 - and 2, I was asked “Will there be more goats?” the most frequently!
They went through many iterations as the script developed. At first Gemma was to have a “comfort goat” in her suite which would entail an embroidered coat. My colleague Larry built several versions to try both on the toy and life versions. Production wanted very young, small goats but we were restricted by their breeding season - there were a lot of balls in the air!
We had different ages of goats come to the set to see the sizes - one of the photos is of our DP and director of the Gemma 207 episode, Jessica Lee Gagné, trying out a 4 month old goat out on her lap.
And then the strike came. All those goats grew up and by the time we returned 5 months later, the decision was made to have one goat - Emile - with no coat! Our props department had a beautiful, animatronic goat made - video in comments - to help “Emile” work the long days!
All in all, the goats brought levity to our production with their mischievous ways, as a farm girl, who grew up with goats, they made me very happy!

As we await the final episode of Season 2 of Severance, here’s a few more bts morsels. On Episode 3, “Who is Alive?”, we meet a whole new department - The Mammalians, led by the wonderful Gwendolyn Christie. One of the characters we spent a lot of time on, we simply called: Goat Guy. He was wonderfully into the role and thankfully fully embraced wearing a very stinky, taxidermied billy goat atop his head, a heavy faux fur cloak along with the full custom, multi-layered, Mammalian wardrobe. As was common on this show, the costume spanned multiple departments including props, led by Cat Miller and Taking Shape Studio, a prosthetic make-up and creature FX company. As is often typical, we only saw a little of this weird character onscreen in the vast Mammalian department (a tented off golf course in Queens) and so I wanted to share the backstory!

Costume Designer: Sarah Edwards
Prop Master: Cat Miller

The thing with simple costumes is that there is no room for error. There is no sticking a couple of bows or a ruffle on something to hide a flaw. The costumes in Severance, designed by Sarah Edwards, are so simple but so carefully and painstakingly designed. Take Gemma’s “lounge suit”, a seemingly plain two piece but in fact has a multi-layered story. The fabric was originally an undyed virgin wool knit and a large yardage was sent out for dying mint green. However, the result was not what we’d hoped for so our talented ager/dyer Katalina Iturralde, formulated the correct colour and dyed what we needed. It was then sent out to a manufacturer but when THAT came back, it was too big, shapeless and not the “Severance” vibe. I pinned it out on Dichen, took it apart and basically blocked it on the dress form. We had perhaps 2 more fittings, tweaking it until it was exactly what Sarah envisioned. A lot of steps but since she is in it for most of the episode, it had to be right. The result clearly had the desired affect because I’ve had so many comments about it since airing on Thursday!
