Design gets you noticed. Technical thinking gets you produced.

Most designers never got taught the second part. It usually gets treated as someone else's job.

It's not!

Even a basic understanding of what needs to be specified can save you a sample round, and a lot of back and forth with your factory.

My Creating a Fashion Tech Pack course helps you develop that technical thinking and create your technical specification so that your vision can actually be produced.

If you're ready to start wearing your technical hat, type "techpack" in comments.

I've finally made some time between updating course content and practice exercises to work on some personal projects in CLO.

This one reminded me of how often you think you've designed what you want, you even start creating it . . . and then you end up someplace WAY different.

I am NOT a dress girly. Let's start there! But sometimes, I'd like to be. Dresses are so easy. So when I saw someone recently in a strapless ruffle dress, I thought, "I could rock that!"

So I started creating one in CLO. As you can see, I only got as far as the 1st tier of ruffles before I started changing my mind.

Long story short, I ended up here (2nd slide) with a strapless sweatshirt, let's call it. Honestly, this is much more my style. A little athleisure, a little "around the way" femme, and a strapless top construction that will actually stay (and hold me) up, sans bra.

I'm thinking stretch french terry😉. I'm kind of geeked to make it. I hope I have time to do it before the end of the summer!

I can't front, y'all. I am constantly on the fence about whether I should keep my Illustrator course or not.

I got folks in my ear talking about you don't need it anymore, making me feel like I'm outdated and not up on what's relevant now.

The problem is, despite the chit chatter, Illustrator IS still relevant, for a number of reasons including the one I'm highlighting in today's carousel.

So if you're a designer and have been on the fence and asking yourself should I or do I still need to use Illustrator? The answer is probably "yes".

And if you're looking for an in-person class in the NYC metro area, a live online course, or a self paced online course, as some of us used to say (and some of us still say😉), holla at your girl!

Type "holla" in the comments, and I'll send you the info on my Illustrator courses.

Most designers know what a tech pack is, but many aren't certain what makes a tech pack "ready" to handoff to their manufacturer.

If you (or another designer you know) are unsure what constitutes a tech pack that "ready" for sampling or production, this week's YouTube video breaks down exactly what you need to know.

Watch is now on the 383 Design Studio YouTube channel.

AI can generate a flat sketch.

What it can’t do is think through construction for you, anticipate production constraints, or resolve seam logic.

And iteration with intention? That’s still yours.

There’s a place for AI in the design development process: quick color-ups, fabric mockups, getting visual people on board who can’t see the vision from a line drawing.

But the thinking that makes a flat sketch actually useful? That comes from understanding how to build one.

That’s exactly what we work on in Illustrator for Fashion Design Sketching: Level 1 course. And this Saturday, we’ll be face to face, in person in NYC, home of the 2026 NBA Champions, the NY Knicks. (Had to throw that in there;)

If an online flat sketching is just not working for you, and you’re in the NYC area, come join me!

3D fashion tools. AI workflows. Fewer samples. Faster timelines.

My next CAD Chats guest, , has built her entire process around working smarter, not harder, and she's going to break it all down for us.

There's a moment I've seen hundreds of times in my 20 years of teaching.

A designer finishes a course, closes the tab, and thinks, "Ok, now what?"

That moment is what 383 Digital Fashion Design Academy was built to address: the "what next." Swipe through to see what I mean.

If you've taken a course in the past and were unsure what to do next when you completed it, our academy might be your next best step.

Your CLO3D garment looks too big . . . and it might not be a fit issue. 👀

Most patterns, whether you made them in Illustrator, bought them online, or scanned a home sewing pattern, already have seam allowance built in. But CLO3D, patterns don't include seam allowance. So when you import them (and don't remove them), the garment comes out larger than it should on the avatar.

I actually made this mistake in a previous video and only realized it when someone asked about it in the comments.

So naturally, I made a whole video about how to fix it. 😅 And shoutout to .studio for schooling me on this very useful trick!

Watch it now on the 383 Design Studio YouTube channel. 🔗 in comments

P.S. If you're already taking my CLO3D course, make sure you complete this step before moving on with the pattern exercise. 🎓
