Maki J Obara’s early memories of a childhood consists of drawing princesses in dresses using her then most pride possession, a big box of Crayola. Her name ‘MAKI’ means centuries of truth and honesty in Japanese, where her family is originally from. Having developed a flair for fashion in her early years, Maki moves to London straight after high school graduation to study fashion at Central Saint
Martin’s College of Art and Design in 1997. Being obsessed with prints, she discovers her talent for textile design. Maki starts her internship at Vivienne Westwood as a design assistant while still being a student, and is hired by the company soon after. Earning a Fashion Design Degree from Central Saint Martin’s, she stays with Westwood for a couple of years but moves to Tokyo to learn more of the business side of fashion. Spending a year overlooking marketing for The Lazare Diamond, Maki starts working as a Buyer/Merchandiser at CÉLINE for 3 years, until she moved to New York in 2009 to focus on starting her own label. After several stints with various business partners, Maki decides to independently establish MAISON MURASAKI Inc in June 2011. The name MURASAKI derives from Murasaki Shikibu who was a female novelist in 11th century Japan. Maki named the company after Lady Murasaki, to pay homage to all women and to keep her Japanese background deeply rooted into the label. Maki designs timeless clothing combining surrealistic twists in textile and classic glamour. Being a woman designing for other women, she creates beautiful, emotional but wearable clothing to be enjoyed for years. Creating the joy of glamour from the inside out is the mission of MAISON MURASAKI. MAISON MURASAKI’s first collection will debut during New York Fashion Week for Fall Winter 2012-2013.
