Over the past month I took time out to join the residency programme at in Portugal where I embarked on an ongoing research project aimed at highlighting the sheer volume of discarded ropes and nets polluting the marine ecosystem and their potential to be transformed into new materials. It began by focusing on combing the shores of the Tagus River. This ongoing project Comber exemplifies how these materials can be reimagined to create a positive environmental impact. I’m excited to see how I can push MÁLA in a more sustainable direction while continuing to design your favourite pieces.

🪱Wiggling into 2025🪱

As I wrap up my final project of the year I finally have time to come on here to announce that I will be diving back into my practice full time and it feels amazing to leave 2024 behind and step into 2025 to celebrate the hard work and determination I put into this year.

Beginning January 2nd, I’ll be at an artist residency in Portugal with where I plan to immerse myself in my art and reconnect with my roots—where my journey in textiles began with a wild curiosity for design and creating art.

Here’s to dreaming bigger, creating bolder in 2025. Thank you all for coming along this journey with me 💗Cheers to an inspiring new chapter! 🥂⚡️

My textile journey began with a love for design and art for the home, and now I’m returning to those roots with fresh energy. ✂️Happy Pride Month💋~ I feel like this is a good opportunity to reintroduce myself. My name is Hannah Whelan I am a q***r textile designer from Ireland currently based in London having spent most of my time honing my craft in and growing my design experience in NYC.
