It’s Father’s Day. I want to start by saying Happy Father’s Day to all the Mom’s who have to be both. I was raised by a Mother who did an amazing job at showing me how to be a man, and taught me everything I needed to, to be the great dad I am today to my son. I would not be even half of the Father I am if it weren’t for that amazing woman who, when I was growing up, did everything she did to protect my relationship with my father. She knew how important it was for a child to have a healthy view of their dad growing up & she protected me from the truth about him. I obviously figured out he sucked on my own as an adult. But I always knew who made the effort. I saw who it was that was present physically or otherwise. I would go to Mexico to visit & just spend time with my Abuelita and my cousins even when I was AT my Dad’s house he was never present. Every time my dad called he would say why I never called HIM. But I am not my father. I’m already a much better dad. Ari and I may not live in the same country right now but come July I’ll have been to Australia 6 times in the last 15 months. There is no distance that I won’t travel to make sure my son knows that daddy may leave sometimes, but daddy will always come back. He may not understand yet why we don’t live together right now anymore after having spent almost 3 years of his life attached at the hip. But he will always know that his daddy made the effort, showed up, went on adventures, was present, had fun, made fart jokes and was his best friend and twin. He will always know that his daddy would travel to the opposite side of the world for him whenever he can. It’s my 5th Father’s Day this year. And I’m thankful to all of you who’ve been so kind and supported me & have been there for me knowing how hard it’s been to be away from him. I love you guys. Happy Father’s Day everyone. Especially to the dad’s who show up and make the effort and to the Mom’s who raise great dads.
