A step forward for lipedema recognition 🀍
For years, lipedema has lacked a dedicated diagnosis code in the U.S. Providers have had to rely on general codes that don't capture what this condition actually is, making documentation, research and access to care harder than it should be.
That's starting to change. Lipedema-specific ICD-10 codes are moving forward in the U.S. review process, with October 2027 marking the earliest possible date they could take effect.
It's not the finish line yet but it's real progress, built on years of advocacy from patients, researchers and clinicians who refused to let this condition stay invisible in the system. When a disease has its own code, it becomes visible to researchers, providers and the systems that decide who gets care.
We'll keep you posted as this moves forward🦡🀍

Nobody warned you it could feel like this 🀍
Menopause and lipedema share a very real physiological overlap. When estrogen levels drop, many women notice increased pain, tenderness and changes in their body that feel impossible to make sense of.
Too often, they're told it's just aging. Or that they need to eat less and move more.
It's not. And they don't.
What they need is proper evaluation and treatment because lipedema is a recognized condition with actual options.
You deserve answers!
πŸ“Œ Save this if you or someone you know has been brushed off by a provider.

Part 2️⃣ of our doctor's appointment series: What to say once you're in the room πŸ‘©β€βš•
Knowing how to frame your symptoms can make the difference between being heard and being sent home with no answers.
Here are some starting points you can adapt to your own experience and your own words.

πŸ’ͺ "I've noticed my legs don't respond to diet or exercise the way the rest of my body does."
This puts the focus on a specific, observable pattern. Doctors respond to data.

πŸ’ͺ "The swelling affects both legs equally and stops at my ankles."
Symmetry and the ankle cuff are two of the most distinctive markers of lipedema. Naming them signals you've done your research and makes it harder to brush off.

πŸ’ͺ "I experience tenderness and bruising that feels disproportionate to any impact."
Vague pain is easy to dismiss. Framing it this way makes it clinical and specific.

πŸ’ͺ "My symptoms get worse in heat and by the end of the day. Compression brings relief."
Heat sensitivity and compression response are meaningful clinical clues. Mentioning both connects the dots for your doctor.

πŸ’ͺ "I have a family history of similar symptoms. Could this be lipedema?"
Naming the condition directly is important. Many doctors won't bring it up unless you do. Asking the question puts it on the table.

πŸ’ͺ "I'd like to be referred to a specialist who has experience with lipedema or lymphatic conditions."
If you feel dismissed, you are allowed to ask for a referral. This is calm, specific and hard to refuse.

You are allowed to advocate for yourself and ask questions!

Before your next doctor's appointment, there's one thing that can make a real difference: going in prepared.
Many women with lipedema spend years sometimes decades looking for answers. Appointments that end in frustration, symptoms that get explained away and a feeling that something is wrong, but no one can seem to name it are part of the journey.
The medical system wasn't built to recognize lipedema. But walking in with a clear, specific picture of your symptoms changes the dynamic.
Here's everything worth tracking before you go in:
Write down your symptom history
When did the heaviness start? Has it gotten worse over time? Do both legs feel the same? Does the swelling stop at your ankles but leave your feet unaffected? The more specific your pattern, the harder it is to dismiss.

Note what doesn't work
Have you tried dieting? Exercise? What changed and what didn't? "My legs don't respond the way the rest of my body does" is a powerful sentence to bring into that room.

Track your pain
Is it pressure sensitivity? Tenderness without injury? Heaviness that rest doesn't fix? Write it down before you go in. Vague discomfort is easy to dismiss. Specific symptoms are harder to ignore.

Document your family history
Lipedema runs in families. Did your mother, aunt or sister have similar symptoms. Mention it even if they were never diagnosed.

Bring photos if you have them
Swelling can fluctuate. If your legs look different at the end of the day versus the morning, document it. Visual evidence matters.

Part 2 coming soon: exactly what to say once you're in the room.

Does this sound familiar?

Your legs feel heavy even after a full night's sleep. You bruise easily, without really knowing why. You've tried everything and your waist changes, but your legs never do. Your doctor ran the tests and told you everything looks fine.

And yet something has always felt off.

If you've been nodding along while reading this, you're not imagining it and you're not alone.
These are some of the most common signs of lipedema: a chronic condition that affects an estimated 1 in 10 women and is still widely missed or misdiagnosed by medical professionals. Many women spend years looking for answers before they finally find one.
Lipedema causes a specific pattern of fat distribution in the legs and sometimes the arms that doesn't respond to diet or exercise the way typical body fat does. It often comes with pain, tenderness, easy bruising and a heaviness that rest doesn't fix. And because it doesn't show up on standard tests, women are frequently told their symptoms are normal or that they just need to try harder.
They don't. And neither do you.
Swipe through to see the most common signs and save this post if it's relatable.
If someone in your life has been struggling to find answers, this might be worth sharing with them.

πŸ‘‡ Did any of these signs that sound familiar? We'd love to hear your story in the comments!

Let's cut the BS πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ

Women with lipedema are tired of being told to just try harder or diet and exercise more.
Lipedema is a real, diagnosable medical condition.

This June, we're having the conversations that are long overdue. With the help of Jean Marino, NP, Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and Certified Menopause Specialist, we're breaking down what lipedema actually is, why it gets missed and what you actually deserve from your healthcare provider.

This month, we're talking about what often goes unspoken:
The symptoms that were dismissed as "just weight."
The bruising no one could explain.
The exhaustion of not being believed- even by yourself.

Lipedema affects millions of women. But for too long, it's been a condition that women navigate alone, in silence, wondering if what they're experiencing is real.

It is.

June is Lipedema Awareness Month.

At Flowell, we're using it to create space for the conversations that are long overdue. We want to talk about the misdiagnoses, mental load and the moments that finally made sense when a name was put to them.

This month, we're not staying quiet.

πŸ’¬ Tell us in the comments: When did you first hear the word lipedema?
