On this ranch, crimson clover, vetch, and other cover crops are planted in succession throughout the year with a dual purpose: building healthier soils and supporting pollinators.

As legumes, these plants help capture nitrogen from the atmosphere and make it available to future forage plants. At the same time, their blooms provide a reliable food source for the honeybees raised on the property, helping produce honey and other hive products.

By stacking benefits such as biodiversity, forage, and habitat for honeybees and other pollinators, this producer is creating a landscape that provides ecological services as well as productivity.

Nothing better than some homemade pecan pie made with Stonewall Pecan Co sitting on a front porch in Oklahoma.

Our crew then sampled one of the pastures that the very pecans came from. The trees on the Overturff Farm are all native growth, meaning they voluntarily grew in the area. They were not planted in rows like an orchard, instead they developed wherever the wind blew.

They then graze cattle under the pecan tree canopy which the cattle appreciate for shade. Integrating livestock is one of the regenerative agriculture principle, improving soil health and biodiversity.

The team approved of the delicious pecan pie. Thank you Stonewall Pecan Co and Overturf Farms for being such gracious hosts!

Oklahoma’s Mother Nature might be having a serious hot flash, and she’s not letting up yet!

With above normal temperatures and drought hanging on across the state, keep these cool-season planting tips in mind:
🌱 Have your seed on hand and ready to go the moment you catch a rain in the forecast.
☔ If the rain doesn’t come in time for your cool-season mix to emerge, don’t panic.
🌾 In warm-season heavy grazing systems, cool-season seed can stay viable through the summer and may respond next fall when conditions improve—think of it as an investment in next season, not a total loss.

Drought and heat can hit both your forage production and your bottom line, so do what’s best for **your** operation.

Have questions about cool-season options on your place? Drop a comment or message us to visit with one of our soil health specialists. We can talk through different options for your farm.
