Cayuga ducks are some of our favorite here at the G Spot. Though they only lay about 100-150 eggs per year they are are a staple on our farm.
When a Cayuga duck starts laying, her first eggs have a dark gray to black bloom due to a high concentration of pigment. This natural coating gradually fades over the season, with each egg getting lighter in color—from black to slate gray, then to light gray, pale green, blue, or nearly white.
The eggshell beneath is lighter, and the dark color is only on the surface. Washing the egg removes the pigment, revealing the lighter shell underneath. This natural fading process varies between ducks and adds a unique, beautiful touch to raising Cayuga's.
There are three North American native ducks on the Livestock Conservation list and the Cayuga is one of them.
