During World War II, the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights were moved for safekeeping and stored at Fort Knox. In a dangerous age, America guarded its founding words with the same seriousness used for national treasure.

July 4 declared the promise. August 2 put their names beneath it.

The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776—but most of the delegates signed the historic parchment on August 2.

Those signatures were far more than ceremonial. Each man openly committed himself to an uncertain struggle against the most powerful empire in the world. They pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to a nation that had declared its freedom—but had not yet secured it.

Their courage reminds us that liberty is never preserved by words alone. It requires conviction, sacrifice, and men and women willing to stand behind what they believe.

Would you have signed your name?

The election of 1800 ended in an Electoral College tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, sending the decision to the House of Representatives. The confusion exposed flaws in the original system and led to the 12th Amendment. American constitutional history is full of moments where dysfunction forced improvement.

Thomas Jefferson's inauguration in 1801 marked the first peaceful transfer of presidential power between opposing political parties under the Constitution. At the time, that outcome was one of the republic's greatest tests. America proved that power could change hands without the nation coming apart.
