The below history is courtesy of NDCM(MDV) Dave Gove, Navy Diver Enlisted Community Manager.

Diving History -- History of the Navy Diver Rating.

The very first Diving rating was Gunners Mate.

Instruction in simple diving had been part of the course at the Gunnery School because Gunners Mates were assigned as ships divers as a collateral duty.

The introduction of the torpedo, a weapon that revolutionized Navy warfare caused the Navy to require a more in depth training pipeline to support torpedo testing and recovery.

In order to support this, the Navy established a school under Chief Gunners Mate Jacob Anderson to teach diving (August 1, 1882).

Chief Anderson's two week course was the first designed solely to train divers.
Based in Newport, RI; the school trained divers to descend to a maximum depth of 60 feet to recover exercise torpedoes.

The course of instruction was based solely on dress of the diver and underwater procedures.

Things like decompression, DCS or AGE were years from being discovered.

As the mission of the Navy Diver grew, so did the training and recognition of the program.

In 1929 two Diver's distinguishing marks (patches) were introduced. The Master Diver mark had a block letter "M" on the breast plate and the First Class Diver mark had the numeral "1".

Shortly there-after, two additional Diver distinguishing marks were added; Second Class Divers and Salvage Divers.

These cloth marks were awarded based on in-water/operational knowledge as much as they were on the training the individual received.

The outstanding contributions the Navy Diver had during WWII caused the Navy to attempt the establishment of a Diver rating in 1948.

Mami Wata originates out of West, Central, and Southern Africa. Mermaid legends were not limited to one region or country. Sailors and coastal city populations blended stories, and more and more depictions of half-woman, half-fish came to life globally. Many of these stories merged into one, and as such this particular African mermaid known as Mami Wata was born.

This was a design request by a good friend of mine and it’s to date one of my favorites.

I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did making both the shirt design and bringing it all to life.

Working on merging my art and AI algorithmic art to bring some of the designs to life. Also enjoying the capabilities and challenges of AI Art. It’s incredible how much goes into prompts and edits and remix and the constant delete and start from scratch.

Anyway I hope you enjoy.

Untethered

This beautiful mermaid is in honor of the Hawaiian water spirits - Mo’o. I truly hope that this design honors the culture and spirit of the islands and puts a smile on your face. Little backstory:

“In Hawaii Mo'o is an umbrella term to describe all sorts of water spirits. Mermaids in Hawaiian mythology are sea goddesses and sea gods. They were humanoid hybrids between humans and fishes, serpents, eels, octopuses or even crocodiles. Mo'o's could be extremely tiny creatures or they could be gigantic. It was believed that Mo'o's originally developed from gecko lizards to human women and then to sea goddesses. Mo'o lived in both salt and fresh waters. In lagoons, ponds, rivers, lakes and in the ocean. There is a Hawaiian expression that in each woman there lives a little Mo'o inside them.”
