At Running Etc., we love animals. Each Monday we highlight a dog or cat from a local rescue shelter. We hope to increase the networking for animals in need of a forever home. You might even find a wonderful running buddy, or more importantly, a terrific family member.
All rescues are in need of foster homes.

Why Foster:

* Fostering allows a cat the chance to know what it feels like to be loved and cared for.
* Fostering reduces the number of cats and kittens in shelters or on the streets.
* Fostering makes room for rescues to save other cats and kittens.
* Fostering helps shy cats learn to socialize so they can be adopted out.
* Fostering gives a cat the opportunity to live in a home rather than inside a cage.
* Fostering literally SAVES LIVES!

Today we feature kitties from Billie the Kitten Rescue. Wonderboy, Little Girl, Little Big Face, and Fry PoTayTo are all 3 months old and ready to find their loving forever home/family.

For more info on adopting one of these precious kitties, fostering or donating please go to https://www.billythekiddenrescue.org

On Friday July 11, we are honored to be hosting the registration and packet pick-up for the Allen Stone Memorial Races
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Location: Running Etc. (Virginia Beach)1940 Laskin Road #302

Event Details: The races start at the 24th Street Park on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront at 7:30 AM on Saturday, July 12th.

They are also in great need of volunteers to help out on Saturday!! You can click the link below to volunteer.

Event History: When this race was run for the first time in 1999, it was called the Braveheart Run-Swim-Run. Allen Stone, a local Navy SEAL and friend of the organizers, competed in the event and won the 20–29 male age group.
Tragically, it was Allen’s last race. A short time later, he died during a Navy SEAL training exercise. To honor his courageous service, the race committee decided to rename the race as a memorial to their fallen friend and local hero. We hope you'll share our appreciation for Allen’s courageous spirit and participate in this exciting, family-friendly sporting event in Virginia Beach. With Allen's enthusiastic zeal for life and outgoing personality, we know he would have welcomed you!

Meet gorgeous Lazlo!

Lazlo's family was 110% ready to transport their beloved dog to their next duty station.
Every detail was squared away... until someone in base housing decided Lazlo looked too much like a pit bull.
Spoiler alert: he doesn't.

Lazlo is healthy, house-trained, four years old, and wonderful with children and other dogs.
He reads the room like a pro -- zooming when it's playtime, softening his body and his voice when gentleness is needed.
He was cherished for three full years, and he knows how to return the favor.
Lazlo has been a best friend, a fellow explorer on hikes, and a co-pilot on the couch.
When his people needed comfort, he leaned in close. When they needed joy, he brought the party.
And now this very good boy is here, at a shelter, because someone thought his face looked a little too square.
PLEASE SHARE THIS POST and help get Lazlo home. Because no loyal dog should lose his family over the shape of his head.
Lazlo is at the https://www.animalaidsociety.org

Meet Clifford the Big Red Dog!

This beautiful boy is a big red hound mix, about 3-years-old. He came from an overcrowded rural shelter.
Clifford has been in a foster home the last 4 months recovering from his Heartworm treatment. He is now free and clear of heartworms! He has gained a bit of weight during his treatment and slower pace. He has gone from a very slim 60-pounds to a tad overweight at 84-pounds!
This gentle boy is happy, snuggly, soft, and just grateful for any friend who stops by! He loves toys, but even more than that, he loves laying at your feet and getting pets and rubs. He loves company and would enjoy being the center of attention in your home.

Clifford the Big Red Dog is in foster affiliated with Animal Aid Society. Please email or call to schedule a meet and greet. Call 757-865-0511 or email your name and number to [email protected] to see our Cliff

Sometimes words are worth reposting . These powerful and beautiful words came from Justin Hall who used to live in our area and was a Running Etc Ambassador.

“Hey you’re moving pretty good for a big guy!”

On my run this morning, a gentleman; shirtless, tall, fit, 2” inseam shorts, bright orange Aasics, well-kept hair, passed me on Atlantic avenue and decided to share this comment with me.
He doesn’t know who I am, he doesn’t know I was 3 miles into a 10-mile run. He doesn’t know I used to weigh 350 pounds. He doesn’t know I’m training for an Ultra Marathon, I mean, how could he?
He also doesn’t know if this was my first run ever on my journey towards better health, if I had just built up the courage to run in public for the first time due to being self conscious, if I was battling with food addiction, if I had been injured and put on extra weight.
He didn’t know, so how could I blame him for how I perceived his comment?
I can’t.
But what I can do is say that not knowing anyones journey makes it so important to be mindful of words that are used. I thought about his comment as I struggled through a hot run today and it then caused me to mentally struggle as I let it occupy my thoughts more than I should have.
Sometimes less is more. I hope he wasn’t trying to be derogatory, I hope he wasn’t trying to intentionally point out my biggest insecurity, I really do hope that that’s the case.
What I also hope, is that the countless runners I said good morning to, smiled at, and “woo hoo’d” this morning know that I support them without ever having even met them. I hope that the person walking/driving by me sees a “big guy” running and thinks “hey if he can do it, why can’t I?”.
Most importantly though, I hope you take an extra moment to think about how your words can impact others, and that sometimes, less is more. No s**t I’m a big dude, it’s incredibly obvious just by looking at me, but let’s just keep it to a “nice work”, “moving well this morning” or “lookin strong” because trust me, that’s more than enough to make someone’s day. Be kind, be thoughtful. You’re doing great. 💙
