⚠️ FLOODWATER IS NOT A PLAYGROUND ⚠️
With heavy rain and flooding affecting portions of our community, Branford Emergency Management in collaboration with the East Shore District Health Department want to remind everyone of a serious but often overlooked danger:
Please keep children—and adults—out of floodwater.
Floodwater can contain far more than rainwater. It may be contaminated with:
• Raw sewage and wastewater
• Human and animal f***s
• Bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens
• Household chemicals and hazardous substances
• Oil, gasoline, and other pollutants
• Sharp objects, broken glass, and other debris
• Hidden hazards such as open drains, submerged obstacles, and electrical dangers
You cannot determine whether floodwater is safe simply by looking at it. Even water that appears clean may be contaminated.
Allowing children to play, swim, wade, or splash in floodwater can expose them to serious illness, injury, and potentially life-threatening hazards. Children are especially vulnerable because they may accidentally swallow the water or have cuts and scrapes that allow contaminants to enter the body.
Please keep children away from flooded streets, yards, drainage areas, streams, and other standing or moving water until the area has been determined to be safe.
Turn around. Don’t drown. And keep children out of floodwater.
A few minutes of fun is not worth the risk of exposure to sewage, dangerous bacteria, chemicals, hidden debris, or electrical hazards.
When it comes to floodwater, if you don't know what's in it, assume it's contaminated.
