Hosted by Nadene Mairesse, this class will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about historical dyeing processes and use dye to print on fabric.
Participants will dye and paint 2-3 pieces of 12" square cotton muslin which they can use as quiltblocks, cushion covers, or framed wall hangings.

Students will be introduced to the history of plant based dyes and guided through historical dyeing processes including mordanting (preparation) of the cloth to creation of the dye bath using foraged native plants such as Osage Orange, Staghorn Sumac and Black Walnut. Nadene will give an overview of native Alabama dye plants and tips on foraging responsibly. As their textiles are soaking up the plant dye, students will mix mineral based paints to apply pattern to their dyed cotton cloth. Nadene will then explain how to finish the dyed textile pieces to ensure color and lightfastness.

The Alabama Plant Series is a set of five workshops hosted at Popeโ€™s Tavern Museum. These workshops are meant to draw the connections between Native American cultures, Alabama plants, and the products created by people that are rooted in early traditions.

All of these events will cost $20 per participant and will take place at Popeโ€™s Tavern Museum, 203 Hermitage Drive, Florence, AL. Popeโ€™s Tavern is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am until 4pm, and is located at 203 Hermitage Drive, Florence, AL 35630. For questions, call : (256) 760-6379 or email: [email protected].

A piece I made for โ€œHumble:Cloth Storiesโ€ currently on view

Humble: Cloth Stories brings together artists who explore the quiet power of cloth as a keeper of memory, identity and lived experience. Rather than focusing on fiber as ornament or technique, the exhibition honors everyday objects and pieces shaped by touch, use, and necessity. The works reveal how fabric holds the presence of past lives, how repairs become records and how beauty often appears not in extravagance but in the modest, the weathered and the mended.
The exhibition is curated by Doug Baulos, Yuko Kojima and Sumiyo Iwasa

In contrast to the slo-o-o-w process of preparing dye baths ( so much stirring, waiting, watching) Iโ€™ve been working with just needle and thread for the last few days and itโ€™s hard to describe the satisfaction /instant gratification of hand stitching. I literally canโ€™t put it down. Years ago I followed a course offered by .lab - we made daily samplers of over a dozen sashiko stitches patterns and I still return to those samplers for inspiration.
I love working with denim western shirts because the double layered yokes are literally asking for stitches- they look beautiful and also add reinforcement to that part of the shirt that endures the most wear.

In the dye studio with warm, earthy tones that remind me of cinnamon and nutmeg. It took some finessing of time, temperature and ph level to pull the red tones out out of the cutch dye.
