I had a pretty successful day on Facebook Marketplace yesterday!

I showed up to pick up some swizzle sticks, but the seller had a few surprises that weren’t even posted.

First up: two HUGE insects from Indonesia—a Citrus Locust and a Leopard-Spotted Walking Stick. Both are available for sale.

Then, these incredible shrunken heads. They’re artisan-made replicas from ceramic or clay, have some serious weight to them, and even have long, real hair. I’m keeping one and selling the other… but which one should I keep?

And finally, the reason I made the trip: a rare pick and matchbox from the Kahiki. But the real prize? These swizzles and picks from Trader Franks at Tiki Gardens—one of America’s lost exotic roadside attractions.

Not a bad Marketplace haul!

Till next time. 🤙

New Sticker Drop!

Now these are some candidates that I can get behind. These two know exactly how to put the PARTY back in the party! Celebrate 1934, when Don and Vic opened their bars, Don's Beachcomber Cafe and Hinky D***s respectively. Get yours before they run out!

A quick trip to visit my parents in Delaware paid some serious dividends. I couldn’t resist breaking away for a little vintage sourcing.

I came across this rare vintage United Airlines travel agency backlit sign from the early 1970s. It features a molded tiki frame with a raised, 3D topographic map of the Hawaiian Islands. A pretty amazing piece of airline and Polynesian pop history.

At the same spot, I also found a United Airlines Hawaiian Vacations brochure printed in January 1959—just months before Hawaii became the 50th state.

1959 was also the dawn of the Jet Age, with Pan Am introducing the Boeing 707 and cutting travel time from the mainland to Honolulu nearly in half.

And in true tiki fashion, Martin Denny released Quiet Village that same year.

A pretty cool snapshot of the moment when Hawaii, jet travel, and tiki culture all came together.

Mahalo, Delaware! 🍹🌺✈️

Some of you know I sold my design agency after 20 years to spend more time hunting vintage and creating tiki art. What a lot of people don’t know is that I never really stopped branding.

Chris and Julie from the caught up with me at The Hukilau and asked if I’d give their brand a much-needed refresh. How could I say no? Over the past month, we gave their identity a complete glow-up.

We replaced the old clip art with a custom logo, created a new wordmark, introduced Buckeye Bob (a mash-up of Tiki Bob and an Ohio buckeye), refreshed their “Aloha from Ohio” slogan into a usable graphic, designed a custom patch and tapa pattern, and wrapped it all up with a brand style guide.

It was a fun project for some genuinely great people, and I can’t wait to see where they take the brand next.

And if you’ve got a business, club, event, or even a home tiki bar that could use its own identity, hit me up. I still take on branding projects, and my home tiki bar logo packages can include everything from a custom logo to swizzle sticks, coasters, matchbooks, and more.

Always happy to make cool stuff with cool people.
