An inspiring, simple notebook that celebrates the American spirit and values and helps you learn more about the thoughts of the fifty-six men who, in the summer of 1776, signed the Declaration of Independence. 🇺🇸

It's the first official product of I Love Love Love the USA. It has images and verified quotes for each of the signers. Some quotes are about the events of 1776, some are about more mundane things. Together, the words of the signers build a more nuanced picture of life when America became a nation.

Eric is my step-brother-in-law. He has dedicated his life to preaching the Christian gospel and way of life and to serving in church.

Because of this, he and his wife and kids travel often and have moved several times hundreds of miles away from Buffalo to live near churches that needed their help.

Eric reads a lot and enjoys classical literature such as the works of Charles Dickens. He has a logical mind that helps him make compelling arguments for things he believes in, but he also has artistic interests and skills, such as playing the guitar and writing and illustrating children’s books.

When I reached out to ask why Eric loves America, this is what his answer was.

“I love America because of the principle she was founded on. That our rights come from God, not government. That it is the government's responsibility to secure these God-given rights.

Despite the stains on her history, America has been a work in progress, striving to achieve the ideal that all men are created equal. From the very beginning of our founding, men and women have advocated to make this a reality, including the man on our 100-dollar bill.”

Gary is my father-in-law. He has lived in several states and has worked many jobs, from maintenance, to construction, to helping out veterans.

There have been times when he worked multiple jobs at the same time, sleeping only for a few hours at night, then working the entire rest of the day.

When I first met him he was working on his own as a handyman. He did that for more than a decade, and the projects he worked on were as varied as installing roofs, fixing plumbing, doing electrical work, and restoring church steeples.

This explains why he can often troubleshoot home repair issues without first having to inspect things or take them apart.

He has the energy and the joy of a child. He’s constantly working on projects around the house, he builds furniture, and he loves to surprise people with handmade gifts. Recently, he built a wheelbarrow for my daughter to help her with gardening projects.

He plays the guitar, enjoys history and historical documentaries, goes to church regularly, and loves his family and God.

When I asked Gary why he loves America, this is what he had to say.

“AMERICA, where do I begin? I will try to claim that old expression, ‘little is much’, as I share my sentiments concerning America. But even when I choose a familiar patriotic word like Liberty as a touch stone, it seems to become exponential as one grand thought leads to another. So I will just say, ‘Thank you, America!’

Lincoln, in his Gettysburg Address, expressed it this way. He said we were conceived in liberty, leaving us hope for the future.

The conception of America is still just the beginning. Let us unite to keep it alive.”

The proof copy of my Psalm 33:12 notebook is here. Alex is modeling it for me. ❤️ The design turned out nice, but the notebook itself is only OK, even if it is hardcover.

I'll try bookbinding it myself, even though I know nothing of bookbinding. 😁 Let the adventures begin.

The proof for the first notebook I designed for adults. The front cover shows the Declaration of Independence, and the back cover shows part of a scene from the signing of the Declaration. ❤

The long gray and semi-transparent rectangle that goes across the cover is a watermark showing this is only a proof copy. The final notebook doesn't have the watermark.

I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Christin McMasters is a self-proclaimed millennial Constitutionalist from Charleston, SC. She has a Ph.D. in political science and writes a blog about topics such as liberty, the Constitution, our Founding Fathers, and our government.

Christin’s blog is called The Liberty Belle, and I found it when I looked up reasons why people love the US. The design of the blog and its ads didn’t make a good first impression, but the content did.

Christin writes in a simple yet powerful and engaging style, and, after spending some time on her blog, I got the feeling she is someone I would like to hang out with.

On her blog, Christin lists thirty-one reasons why she loves our country. While all the reasons are thoughtful, positive, and inspiring, three of them stood out to me because I hadn’t seen them as clearly explained before. Here are those reasons in Christin’s own words:

1. I love America because she is the only nation to have gone to war with herself to abolish slavery.

2. I love America because, in America, rights are not given or earned, they are inherent.

3. I love America because of what she stands for, fights for, and dies for: LIBERTY.

Some other reasons Christin gives are:

- America is still the embodiment of hope both for her people, and for people all over the world who see her as the place to build a better life.

- America gives opportunity for innovation and invention in all fields of study and in all industries.

- America is wealthy and generous with its wealth.

- America is loved by its people, some of whom believed or believe so much in her value that they gave or are willing to give their lives to protect her and to help her endure.

- America enables her people to speak their mind, to see failures as challenges and as opportunities for growth, to live according to their faith and their values, to follow their dreams, and to live fulfilling lives.

- America has beautiful landscapes and beautiful local communities with vibrant cultures and unique personalities.

Blogs like Christin’s make me grateful we have the Internet and social media. It’s unlikely I would have read Christin’s thoughts otherwise, and I’m happy to be able to share them here. Most of us love the US and are deeply grateful for our beautiful country. We love America intensely but quietly.

That kind of love feels right and true. After all, love is not loud and does not boast. Instead, love is personal, kind, and unshakable.

However, there are times when love needs to speak up, and right now is one of those times. Too much of what we see on social media today comes from unhappy people who focus on criticizing our country.

Those messages give us the wrong impression that Americans care less than they used to about the US.

That’s why we need to speak up. We don’t have to be loud or confrontational about it. We can do it kindly, respectfully, and in an inspiring way.

If we do that, if we do share our stories, we can help remind others that our love for America is still strong, that we still believe in this beautiful ideal. We can brighten the day and the spirit of others. We can be uplifting.

If you’ve seen my recent writing, then you know that that is one of the things I’m trying to do with “I Love Love Love the USA”.

For example, I created the series called "Why I Love the USA" to be a collection of positive stories about people who love our country. Think of it as uplifting patriotism.

I'm constantly looking for new stories. If you want to help me grow this collection and add your own story to it, please let me know.

Barb is my mother-in-law. One thing that stands out about her is that she is practical, caring, and strong.

As an example, she worked as a hospice nurse for a while, a job that can break the heart of even the strongest people since, no matter how hard you try, patients don’t get better. The best you can do is make them feel comfortable until they pass away.

That job DID break Barb’s heart often. In her place, I would have closed my heart a little to protect myself from getting hurt again. That’s not what she did though. She kept giving her best care, felt emotional when patients passed away, then came home, put her work emotions away, and became fully present for us, her family.

Other things to know about Barb are that she is very active and enjoys walking, riding her bike, or exercising every day.

She likes sewing and, when my daughters were younger, she sewed for them old-fashioned dresses that often made passersby smile and make beautiful comments.

She loves being with family. She’s the kind of grandma that spoils her grandkids, dances with them, goes on rollercoasters with them, and consistently has them over for sleepovers.

She makes perfect apple pies and, according to the grandkids, she makes the best goulash.

When I asked Barb why she loves America, this is what she had to say.

“I love America for so many reasons, but the one that stands out the most is being able to go to church and read my bible in public. I raised my children in church, and now all my grandchildren go, which I’m thankful for.

My dad was a veteran and taught me, a young girl, to be proud of where we live. To this day, when I sing God Bless America and say the pledge of allegiance, I get teary-eyed and thankful to be living in such a great country as America.”

Dave is my brother-in-law. He’s hardworking and smart, two traits that have helped him consistently be promoted at work and quickly go from being a business reporting specialist in a local branch of Citibank to becoming a top leader at a London-based global financial institution.

In addition to being hardworking and smart, he’s also a captivating and witty storyteller. In fact, he is almost the wittiest person I know, second only to my sister. He can bring people to tears with his jokes, but he can also bring them to tears with touching stories about those he loves or about God.

The list of things Dave enjoys or is good at is long. He has a curious mind, and, once something catches his attention, he immerses himself in his new interest and learns not just the basics about it but also things usually known only by experts.

He likes to play golf, reads a lot, has preached at our church, can build and fix computers, is good at video games, collects comics, enjoys discovering local craft beers, occasionally smokes ci**rs, and makes perfect grilled mushroom burgers. One of his more recent interests is smoking meat, and the whole family thinks the results of his experiments are mouthwatering.

When I asked Dave why he loves America, this is what he had to say.

“What I love about the US: it is a country that is, at its heart, built on the principle that all people are important, and that their rights and ideas deserve respect.

I love that there are many cultures in my home town and while we all stand together as Americans, the strengths of those cultures still have room to stay unique and flourish for all to enjoy.

I love the different points of view, the traditions, and the foods we get as a result.

The more we protect the rights and the originality of others, the more we become strong together.”
