Bridget’s - An Irish Tradition emerged on the Irish import scene in 1987. The original 500 square foot location, located in Cordage Park in Plymouth, MA, created a shopping and cultural environment unlike any other Irish import shop in New England. This traditi

on continues to this day. Now, in 2021 with all of the retail operations centered under one roof in a lovely building on Route 123 in Norton, Bridget’s maintains its standing as New England’s premier Irish shop. To experience all that is wonderful about Bridget’s An Irish Tradition, you must stop by for a visit. You will be greeted by knowledgeable, experienced sales associates, (including Bridget, herself!) assisted with personalized service, welcomed by the delightful old-world ambiance, and invited to browse the extensive range of exquisite imported Irish merchandise, all at excellent prices and great value. NOT THE CLADDAGH!

I posted this lovely photograph earlier and said it was The Claddagh in Galway Bay. It's not! The Claddagh is on the opposite side of the bay, this is The Long Walk. I'm forever making that mistake. 🙈

The walk isn't actually that long, it's only about 315 metres (350 yards) in length but its row of brightly-colourful houses makes it one of the more notable landmarks in Ireland and, with its postcard-perfect aesthetic, vibrant colours and waterfront location, a magnet for photographers.

The Long Walk was built in the 18th century by the Eyre family, its original purpose to extend the quays and act as a breakwater to construct a mud berth (a mooring
place where a vessel rests on the bottom at low tide). The original walk had several archways leading into town but a tsunami in 1755 destroyed those. The tsunami was caused by an earthquake off the coast of Portugal, one of the most destructive in history killing up to 100,000 people. About three hours after the earthquake a tsunami hit Ireland but fortunately it only resulted in flooding and damage.

There are a couple of places where you can get a good view of The Long Walk. One of the best is over at The Claddagh.... which this is not! 🥴

Trinity Knot -
A symbol of never ending love & eternal life
The Trinity knot is one of the most recognizable symbols of Celtic culture. An endless, intertwining Celtic knot work symbol with three corners, it is possibly of pagan origin with its original meaning lost in time. We do know that the number three held deep significance for the Celts, the three corners possibly representing the three intertwined domains of earth, sea and sky, or solar and lunar phases.

In later centuries, The Trinity knot was adapted to Christianity, with the three points representing the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The golden age of Irish art and metalwork coincided with the period of early Irish Christianity, enlightenment, learning and faith which saw Ireland celebrated as the 'isle of saints and scholars'. Irish monks worked from dawn till dusk, working with infinite care and patience to produce handmade and lavishly illustrated versions of the gospels, stopping only to eat and pray. It reflects the convergence of mind, body and spirit - a message which is as powerful and mystical today as it was in those ancient times.

Today the Book of Kells remains a testimony to the artistry which produced this lasting legacy. The twists and turns of the Trinity Knot symbolise the timeless nature of the human spirit. With no beginning and no end, this intricate decoration is a sign of eternal life and never ending love.
