The Quarles - Portrait #5 “Finding Our Joy”. Van Quarles and his family visit Oak Bluffs each summer unfolding another chapter of cherished memories. Van Quarles, a retired Special Agent from the DEA, embarked on his Vineyard journey in 1995, captivated by its blend of history, nature and community. He brought his wife Valerie, to share this special place that she says “rejuvenates my mind, body and soul”. His daughter Brittney Jackson, a marketing executive has been coming since childhood continues to enjoy her visits to the island.

Van shares that from the moment he sets foot on the ferry at Woods Hole, a sense of serenity envelops him, a feeling he describes as ‘spiritual’ and unique to this place. He always stays in Oak Bluffs and starts his day, alongside his wife, for the morning daily group swim that meets at the Inkwell Beach.

On any summer afternoon you will find The Quarles on their cottage porch, enjoying the gentle sea breeze while telling stories, laughing heartily and greeting passersby. It is always a joy to see them because they are in such a state of happiness. They invite their neighbors to join them for a special blend of Ice Tea and some good southern cooking. An afternoon porch visit can easily transform into a long summer evening.

Van describes his summer vacation as a “place of happiness”. Valerie describes it as “Heaven” and Brittney loves how “it always stays the same” providing a sense of community and a summer home.

Through the lens of she captures their enduring commitment to family and to a place that brings them enduring joy. The Quarles are a special important part of our community - the summer visitors who make the island and the town richer with their joyful presence and love of the place and people.

This quote was written down next to my bed for over a year as a reminder to self to embrace the potential of transformational change.

Soulful Expressions Portrait # 3 - Dr. Jessica B. Harris an icon of American culinary scholarship and lifelong Oak Bluffs summer resident. Author of 20+ books, including 12 cookbooks, a memoir and her book turned into Netflix series “High on the Hog.”

Jessica has spent summers in Martha’s Vineyard from childhood brought by her parents who sought a loving and welcoming place for their family vacations. She faithfully and happily returns to the Victorian cottage her parents purchased in Oak Bluffs when she was just 8 years old.

She is a professor emerita at City University of New York earning her PhD from NYU. She was named Time Magazine “Most Influential People” and won the coveted James Beard Lifetime Achievement award. Her work provides profound understanding of the intersection of food, history, and identity. She transports us on a culinary odyssey, celebrating the vibrant flavors and enduring traditions of the African Diaspora.

On a summer evening walking through Oak Bluffs (if you are lucky) you may hear her laughter and lively conversations drifting through the neighborhood often fueled by her rich stories and “real talk” wisdom that is as effervescent and potent as the flowing sparkling rose on her porch.

A sage elder, a global trailblazer, a world renowned scholar, a cultural historian, a treasured neighbor, and a dear friend.

She has shown us that our most treasured inheritance is our connection to the shared heritage found on the plates and tables right in front of us.

“Soulful Expressions” - Meet Richard & Kathy Taylor who summered in Oak Bluffs for 5 decades with their children and extended family. A family who spends much of their summers volunteering & supporting local community institutions.

The Taylors volunteer and serve on Union Chapel Board of Trustees, The Cottagers and founded the non-profit UC cultural and educational institute.

Their impact over the years to Oak Bluffs is significant and their influence extends far beyond the island’s shores. Based in Boston in the off-season, Richard is a renowned real estate investor and developer, a Rhodes scholar and the former MA state commissioner of Transportation. He is the author of “Martha’s Vineyard: Race, Property, and the Power of Place,” offering a unique perspective on the history of home ownership in Oak Bluffs. (His book kept selling out in our store last summer!)

His deep-rooted connection to the island, chronicled in his weekly column for Vineyard Gazette, reflects his lifelong commitment and love affair with Martha’s Vineyard.

Kathy is an accomplished development executive, whose leadership and dedication to community development have left an indelible mark. Together, they infuse every endeavor with a passion for engagement, empowerment and encouraging excellence in everyone around them.

Captured through the lens of , their decades long love story unfolds, showcasing their unwavering commitment to each other, the perseverance of triumph and trials.

The community and culture are all better for having the Taylors as our neighbors, friends and elders. We thank them and are honored to have them included in this Juneteenth portrait series.

Winter is our planning time. Today at Rockefeller Center is Me and jewelry designer extraordinaire braving the crispy New York winter. We chatted all things fine jewelry for the upcoming Jubilee MV Season. Grateful to Sheryl as the first designer to support me on launching Jubilee MV last year with her products and guidance with 20+ years of experience.
