In the Civil War and WWI, socks became essential. Clean, dry socks were some of the most valuable items a soldier could have. Without them, trench foot and infections could mean amputation or worse.

Later, in the 1930s, DuPont introduced nylon- an affordable, durable alternative to silk- and it quickly became a bestseller. Women embraced nylon stockings for their silky texture and strength, but when WWII caused shortages, chaos broke out. They called it the "nylon riots."

In the 70s and '80s, jogging and aerobics trends created demand for socks with better comfort and support. Socks transformed from basic staples into performance gear- with cushioning, breathability, and style. During this time, socks started to become a reflection of personal identity.

At FutureStitch, we build on that legacy. Every day in the lab, we break down what a sock was to reimagine what it could be. Premium performance. Total customization. Crafted by justice-impacted individuals in a LEED Platinum certified facility.

That’s what socks mean now.

A simple garment-- a complex history.

In ancient times, people wanted to make their feet more comfortable. Around 250 A.D. in Egypt, they crafted wool socks with a split between the big toe and other toes, allowing them to be comfortably worn with sandals. Also, Roman soldiers stationed in cold climates adapted by wearing socks with their sandals to keep warm.

In Medieval times- knitting spread to Europe and socks evolved from rough leather to knitted wool. Intricately knit socks became luxury items- symbols of wealth, comfort, and style for the elite.

In the 18th and 18th centuries machines changed everything. During the Industrial Revolution- new inventions like power looms and knitting machines revolutionized sock-making, cutting production times dramatically and turning socks from handcrafted luxuries into mass produced daily essentials.

Come back Friday as we bring socks into the modern era.

We didn’t just add mesh. We engineered airflow.

What you’re seeing isn’t surface-level design- these mesh patterns are part of a technical process, created by our team to provide strategic ventilation and structural integrity.

Each one is built into the knit to align with high-heat zones of the foot.

Lab-tested to run 50% cooler than the competition.

Unbelievably soft. Incredibly absorbent. Engineered for rock-solid performance.

Meet the Josox.

Double-layer construction- no leaks, no stains. Toss it in the wash, and you're good to go.

No mess. No stress. Mom will never know.

And with extra grip on the outside, you’re always in control.

You'll never look at a sock the same way again.

The best design shifts the way we see things. It transforms.

That’s what’s happening at FutureStitch HQ.

First up: a monumental mural by Zio Ziegler, an intricate work symbolizing the fusion of movement, form, and technology- the DNA of everything we create.

More to come.

Sock development isn’t about following a blueprint- it’s about breaking the rules to build something better.

In the lab at FutureStitch, our Lead Developer Michael doesn’t just design socks- he deconstructs them. He spends his days stress-testing fibers, pushing materials to their breaking point, and dissecting the best products on the market to engineer something stronger, softer, and more advanced.

Every sock undergoes extreme testing—pulled, torqued, and worn past its limits to expose weaknesses. The best socks in the world are cut open, unraveled, and reimagined- so we can build something even better. Finally, advanced knitting techniques, experimental yarns, and new performance technologies are tested and refined every day.

Socks may seem simple, but behind every pair is a cycle of destruction and reinvention.
