The Baggage Movement

The Baggage Movement Shattering the silence of broken body boundaries with LOUD Art fashion.

-Carry BAGGAGE that Unburdens. "When words are not enough, art speaks." Educate kids.

Just an Oklahoma mom, creating art that speaks to broken body boundaries. I want to create loud art that gives voice to the hushed topic of abuse. Our conversations create change, but speaking about body violations in children is so socially taboo that I had to find another way to bring it into my daily conversations. Sharing education around broken body boundaries has become an obsession, not wan

ting any family to experience the pain that comes in the wake of being uneducated on prevention measures. I've found that using Art and fashion as an icebreaker makes hard conversations, easier. Education is key. Educate yourself. Provide prevention tools and have conversations early and often.

I did a live painting at Quail Ridge yesterday for their follies.

When I finished I got to tell the story of Jackson Po***cks famous drip paintings.

When I make these Baggage paintings, full of drips and spills and splashed paint, I'm reminded of Jackson Po***ck.

People called it ugly.

They said it wasn't art.

Some were in disgust.

But he threw his soul into them and brought them to life.

People started to see the beauty.
They began to notice little intricacies.
Some saw the dance that was forever written within the movement of his art and felt the emotions of the story he was telling in each pour.

By the time people appreciated his technique, they spent millions to have a piece of his work...because they finally saw the value.

So many of us let other people look on and call our canvas of life a shame.
They say we are broken.
Some think we need to be fixed and our scars covered.
And MOST of the time, the critic who is the most harsh comes from within.

But our value is not lost because of the spills.
Our future is not determined by the drips.
Someone looked at our splotchy canvas,
signed His name, and deemed us worthy.

Unlike any other in ALL of creation.

The MOST valuable.

The Masterpiece.

Today, we spilled paint.

We talked about Jackson Po***ck and the influence he had on the art world.

His work shows us how the drips and spills in life can look like such a mess on our own canvas.

Po***ck would lay out a canvas and sling paint all over the floor. Each drip and pour would frivolously land in its unintended (or intended) spot and no matter what happened within his work space, he would accept it as a part of the piece.

Most artists wouldn't dare let a honey bee land on their paint without trying to remove it, but his allowance of broken glass, staples, cigarette ashes, butts, sand and other items that found their way onto the piece would just be welcomed, as a nod to the memory he was making and preserving during his creating.

Critics called it trash, but others began to see beauty in the freedom that Po***ck was embodying within his work.

Jackson Po***cks art has been known to bring upwards of 200million in auctions... why?

What makes it valuable???

His name.

And when he signs his name, he is claiming his work.

Not only is it worthy, it is valuable...

because he says it is.

I'm thankful for this kind of work.
It's the reminder that so many of us need
to claim the mess and trash and drips and spills on our canvases as

worthy

and

valuable...

a true masterpiece.

Today I got a phone call...

He talked about how a simple conversation led to an unfolding...

An open conversation that resulted in a woman sharing with him the struggle that she has quietly held on to for many many years...

He went on to say "It's because of YOU, because of YOUR story and what you are doing with BAGGAGE..."
I didn't let him finish. I interrupted.

"No, it's not because of my story...it's because you were willing to create a safe space for someone who you'd never met, to be able to open up to you...and there is really something to say about that!!!"

He replied back, "No, you don't understand, I just talked about Baggage...and she shared her own story...all I did was LISTEN...I didn't do or SAY anything special!?"

Yes.

That's the point.

Carrying Baggage is just an outward expression that allows space for important conversations.

I keep saying, "it's not magic!"

But deep down inside...I know that there is truly something so powerful behind it.

Thank you for being vulnerable.
Thank you for being available.
Thank you for listening.

To those of you who carry a piece of this movement with you, you don't realize it yet, but you carry freedom for the next person.

Baggage that unburdens.

I had the privilege of speaking at The Opera House in Elk City last night with a dear friend.

The best part...
At the end of the talk a woman said, "Is it just me, or does the spill on that canvas look just like an ELEPHANT!?"

👀 👀 👀

I had chills.

I get chills often when I get the opportunity to share the story of BAGGAGE.

🙏 I'm grateful.

Thrilled for our Tote bag to be apart of the Stephen E. Booker Foundation fundraiser tonight!

This bag was specifically made for the Children's Advocacy Center and it will be the only one created of its kind.
Piece #2 of the tote collection.

Full leather body.
Rawhide interior.
Hand painted leather art straps to bring stories and pops of shape/color/symbolism to this one of a kind bag.
Double layered leather bottom to support and shape and finished with a pocket and inside snap.

I'm honored for it to be showcased during the second half during the "designer" bag tier of the evening (I don't feel worthy to sit beside the Louis Vuittons, if you know what I mean).

I can't wait to see who walks away with it at the Bingo, Bags and Badges event tonight!

All the scrap. I made this one with all of the discarded pieces that were thrown into the scrap pile...
Sometimes all you have left to give is your "scrap."

You know that feeling?

Today, I had several conversations that all led me to tell the same story...

The conversations both started with someone telling me that they don't feel like they are "enough."

I had to stop them...because that inner voice is pulling from insecurities and negativity and trust me...we all go there.

However, lately, it seems to really be wearing on alot of people.

I responded with 2 stories...about artists...

The first...an artist named DUCHAMP who placed a urinal in the middle of the art museum, called it "The Fountain" caused an uproar, signed his name, and it ended up selling at auction for millions.

The second...Jackson Po***cks splatter and drip paintings, made popular all over 80s prints and clothing, were originally created as absolute messes.

Po***ck, getting drunk and chain smoking during his painting sessions...often put out his ashes and butt's on the canvases themselves!
But he signed his name.
Put it out there...
And guess what?

People have paid over 200million for some of his pieces!?

Dirty. Filthy. Alcohol drenched, ashtray of a masterpiece with paint just smeared, squished, and splatted all over it...nothing making sense.

Both instances, people were quick to judge and point out that because of the "mess" and lacking adherence to societal norms that it wasn't "worthy" of being art.

Sound familiar?

We often point out our own flaws and things where we fall short, where our lives have been too messy with our...mess...dripped with our mistakes...our canvas, ruined.

However,

Someone signed His name.

He signed His name, called us His masterpiece, and THAT'S all we need to be declared VALUABLE.

You are BEYOND valuable.
Your story is worthy.
You, my dear...messy as you are...
Are
HIS
MASTERPIECE.
