Birds of a Feather

Birds of a Feather History:
The Angel Feather Project began in 2014 with the creation of pocket-sized 1st Aid Packs for the homeless. Columba Episcopal Church in Kent.

Mission: To provide direct, tangible assistance to members of the
community who are experiencing housing instability in a
manner that addresses their needs and honors their intrinsic value as human beings. In cooperation with Heroes for the Homeless, these were distributed during their monthly outreaches in Seattle, WA until 2017. The cooperation with Heroes for the Homeless grew to

include providing a variety of survival supplies throughout the year, as well as undertaking morale-boosting projects during the holidays. Over the years, these included providing handwritten Christmas cards, home baked cookies, new socks & candy canes, wrapped Christmas gifts, and filled Easter eggs for the 300 people they served. With the help of donations from friends and family, the Angel Feather Project expanded its reach to include providing meals for Tent City 4 in King County, 1st Aid Packs and snacks to Auburn Youth Services, survival supply backpacks for the homeless to St. George Episcopal Church in Maple Valley, and Christmas stockings for at-risk children to St. The Angel Feather Project began serving the community in Olympia in 2017. Since then, it has provided 1st Aid Packs to Interfaith Works, Just Housing, Hospice Without Borders, and Stand Up For Kids. It has also provided school supplies and Christmas gifts for needy families, as well as survival supplies for the people being served by all the organizations listed above and general supplies to Quixote Village. Most recently, The Angel Feather Project has begun doing monthly, direct outreach to the Olympia encampment known as “The Jungle”. The Jungle usually is home to 60 – 80 people. This outreach includes a nutritious lunch, non-perishable food, water, clothing, and a wide variety of supplies including, but not limited to: cookware, hygiene supplies, tools, backpacks, art supplies, pet food, and seasonal needs (e.g. insect repellent, hand warmers). This has been made possible by the addition of The Angel Feather Crew, a group of extremely dedicated, and generous volunteers. The donations of gently used items by the community allow us to provide a notable assortment of necessities, as well as to lessen our environmental impact. It is our hope to increase our outreaches to more than once a month and/or expand our reach to additional members of the homeless community, as well as to be able to possibly provide events that will benefit and help shore up the morale of the residents. The name refers to refers to doing good works quietly, like feathers drifting on the wind. I invite you to join us by spreading some "feathers of kindness" in your own neighborhood.

Just got this notice from Bombas: “You'll receive a detailed breakdown of the donation items and expected shipment timing in an email next week.” I think that means we will be receiving 750-1000 pairs of socks in the near future! (We’ve been on the waitlist for 3 years!)

You may have noticed I have changed the name of the group. That's because when I started the Angel Feather Project about 14 years ago, it was just me and the name captured the idea that good actions should fall as feathers. "When angels are near, feathers appear." But in recent years, the name has started to feel uncomfortable to me.
After sitting with it for a long time, I decided it was time to retire the name for one that captures the reality of what I do more accurately.
You see, everything I am able to do is because it is a group effort. Whether you donate things from my Amazon Wishlist or
money to buy things somewhere else or you help with the small projects that are SO helpful or you physically show up to hand out supplies and help to keep me somewhat sane, or send good thoughts and prayers from afar, none of what I have been able to do would have ever been possible.
Every single one of you is kind, loving, and compassionate. You are people who want the world to be better and who make life better for people - even ones you may never meet. In short, you are all "Birds of a Feather".
The work you enable me to be able to do belongs to all of us. Together, we are making the world a little better and life a little bit kinder for the people around us.

I am grateful beyond words for allowing me to be a part of your incredibly lovely flock! 💗💗💗
