Frida Kahlo as seen by Imogen Cunningham

In 1931, during a stay in San Francisco, Frida Kahlo was photographed by photographer Imogen Cunningham, one of the pioneers of modern photography and a member of the famous Group of 64.

The result: a sober, direct, and powerful portrait. Frida appears wearing a shawl, traditional jewelry, and an intense gaze.

This image not only documents her time in the United States, but also a key moment in her development as a cultural icon.
Cunningham, with her clear style, captured a different Frida: less of a symbol, more of a person.

An artist portrayed by another artist. Two women ahead of their time.

"I am both: Frida loved by Diego, and Frida no longer wanted by him. I painted pain, bleeding, and loneliness. That is what I felt after he left me."
Her painting "The Two Fridas" (Las dos Fridas) is considered one of Frida Kahlo’s most famous works and her first large-scale oil painting, completed in 1939 after her painful divorce from Diego Rivera. The artwork shows two self-portraits: one wearing a white European-style dress with an open, bleeding heart symbolizing the rejected and wounded side, and the other in a traditional Tehuana dress holding the hand of her counterpart, representing the side that Diego once loved. Today, the painting is displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, standing as a vivid expression of Frida’s duality—between her European and Mexican heritage, between love and loss, between strength and fragility.
