Meet LaRue Dayton 💜 She may have been a spinster English teacher…but she was anything but the stereotype!

LaRue was a mountain climber, a swimmer, a gardener, & a theatre goer. She attended the University of IL, and was a member of their women’s “gymnasium” team before graduating in 1909! A lover of traveling, she often mentioned her dream of flying to Hawaii or returning to Paris, France. She enriched her deep knowledge of English literature with travels to England and spent at least one summer in the Rockies. She played a “wicked” game of bridge and enjoyed “band music at the circus”.

Her students sang her praises, and her yearly yearbook tributes describe her as charming and witty, as well as wise! They admired and respected her knowledge and passion for her subject and declared her to be one “whose words all ears took captive” - William Shakespeare.

On top of all this…LaRue was also quite the fashionista! I had the privilege of purchasing several pieces from her incredible wardrobe (carefully preserved by one of her nieces). The collection ranges from the turn of the century when she was barely 20, through the late 1930s - early 1940s when she was pushing 60! Despite the shifting styles, her good taste carried her through the decades. Each piece adds color to the history of their owner…hinting at a certain “je ne sais quoi” that might not at first be apparent!

Stay tuned for the reveal of the LaRue Collection! 🕊️

This 1920s beaded gown wasn’t always photo ready 🧐 It required careful hand washing, spot treatments, and hand beading to fill in the missing beads. Every step I was so afraid I was going to ruin it (and sometimes that does happen!). But this one made it through…and doesn’t she look amazing? ✨
