The United States has carried out a strike in eastern Syria following an attack near a US-led coalition base.
What’s the deal: According to the Pentagon, the US military conducted a “self-defense strike” near “Military Support Site Euphrates” in eastern Syria, targeting three truck-mounted rocket launchers, a T-64 tank, and mortars that posed an imminent threat to US and coalition forces. The strike was carried out in response to rocket fire that landed near the base and mortar fire directed at US troops.
These weapons, believed to be operated by Iranian-backed militias in the region, were destroyed to prevent further attacks. No injuries or infrastructure damage were reported on the US side following the engagement.
In a statement, a spokesman for the Pentagon said, “We’re still assessing who is operating these weapons but do know that there are Iranian-backed militia groups in the area.”
Digging deeper: This all comes as Iran accuses the United States and Israel of aiding rebel forces in Syria, who have recently seized territory from the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
Iranian-backed militias, operating from Iraq and within Syria, have mobilized to support Assad’s forces in their efforts to repel the rebels, many of whom are tied to designated terrorist organizations like H@y_t T@hr_r -Sh@m (HTS). At the same time, some groups aligned with Assad, including Hezboll@h and other Iranian-allied factions, are also classified as terrorist organizations by the US, making a complicated situation.
