Spotlight on KC's Oldest Retailers: Planters Seed & Spice

For more than a century, Planters Seed & Spice has been giving customers a reason to return to this River Market block.

Brad and Anna Perrin purchased the store in June, becoming the third owners.

It was founded by German immigrant Henry Wertheim in 1924 on the same block and moved to 513 Walnut (in a circa 1880 building) in 1928. The second owner had it since 1980.

Farmers would place their seed orders before setting up their produce at the City Market, then pick the orders up at the end of the day before heading back to their farms. Henry even offered free samples.

Planters still sells seeds of course. But over the years expanded its inventory to "city dwellers" who by the 1950s were spending more on their yards than some farmers spent on their multiacres.

The store - now spread over the first floor of several buildings - has a huge variety of spices (adobo, applewood smoke rub, Herbes de Provence, Jamaican jerk, meatloaf seasoning, mesquite steak, Nashville hot chicken, Old Bay).

Coffee (beans and freshly ground), loose leaf tea, soup bases, extracts and oils, pots and planters, candy (stocked in antique wooden bins), lawn and garden tools, bird feeders and baths, yard ornaments and more.

Brad is a CPA, Anna has a marketing background.

They put in a new POS system and plan to upgrade inventory and
ordering systems. Maybe some new paint there and here.

They want to draw in consumers who have never been to a feed store.

They purchased Merriam Feed + Seed - at 9309 Johnson Drive in Merriam - in 2022 and are also the third owners of that business, which dates to 1952.

โ€œWe love the heritage stores, the history behind them, the community,โ€ Anna said. โ€œThey are fun businesses to be in - plants, spices and feed.โ€
