Longleaf Pine Studies

Back in the sketchbook, exploring the shapes and rhythms of the longleaf pine ecosystem.

These loose studies are helping me think about structure, pattern, and the relationship between the iconic umbrella-shaped pines, native grasses, and coastal landscapes that have inspired me for years. Sometimes a finished piece begins with nothing more than a few lines, a wash of color, and a question.

I’m especially interested in how these forms might evolve into future mixed-media collages and more abstract compositions.

The rain may have delayed the opening, but it certainly didn’t dampen the spirit of the Nature Pilgrimage exhibition at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art.

It was wonderful to reconnect with friends from the art community, especially Kathy Tosh. We’ve known each other since the 1980s when our husbands were involved in high school baseball, and it’s always a pleasure to catch up.

My fern collage is part of the exhibition, hanging beside a beautiful mosaic art piece by Elizabeth Veglia, inspired by her own nature journey. One of the things I enjoyed most was seeing how differently each artist interpreted their experience in nature.

Many thanks to James Inabinet for leading the pilgrimage that sparked this creative exploration, and to Katy Simmons-Carroll and the WAMA team for bringing the exhibition together.

A lovely evening of art, friendship, conversation, and connection to the natural world. 🌿

Studio Notes

Working from photographs and field observations, exploring the shapes of laughing gulls and pelicans.

Sketch. Simplify. Repeat.

Some of these studies may become collage elements, some may become paintings, and some may simply teach me to see a little more clearly.

Every finished piece starts with paying attention.
