I used to think gratitude was about thanking God for the things he’s placed in your life. For the roof he’s placed over your head, the food he’s placed on your table, the opportunities he’s placed in your path, and you know, the little things you often take for granted. Now I know that gratitude is also about thanking him for the things he’s protected you from. For the diseases you didn’t get, the relationships that didn’t work out, the dreams that died in order for you to come alive. Gratitude is about thanking God for both the answered and unanswered prayers. It’s about seeing him in his absence as much as his presence.

I feel like often times we look for him in the things we have and we end up giving him half-hearted gratitude because we miss the whole other side to how he’s working in our lives. We rarely ever look for him in the silences and vacancies, and yet that’s the very place we’re likely to find him. So I challenge you to do a 360 degree search for gratitude this Thanksgiving. Cover all grounds. Because we have a God who works in the margins and with the marginalized. He loves working in the unseen and with the unseen. So thank him for both the haves and have nots this Thanksgiving. Because there’s more blessings to reap and more gratitude to gain, if you can find him in both. Wishing everyone a jubilant Thanksgiving.
