This sweater means more to me than any other piece I’ve knit. This yarn was the last gift from my mother, and was for my 50th birthday. I bought the yarn on the Oregon coast after driving by the herd of sheep Wild Rivers Wool Factory used to make the yarn. I spent what seemed like (to my incredibly supportive partner) many hours, with me sitting on the floor, all the hand spun yarn spread out in front of me picking the perfect combo. She chatted happily with the lovely store owner who encouraged me to honor my process. There are only a handful of yarn store owners who I’ve felt so welcomed by and comfortable in their store, and I can’t recommend enough.

I started the sweater back in January of ‘24, almost a year after my birthday and just a few months after mom passed. My vision wasn’t clicking and I decided to set it aside for a bit.

We have now been settled in our dream home on the opposite side of the country for almost a year, and I felt inspired to dive back into it. I still was not pleased with my original plan, so I frogged what I had and completely switched gears.

I have an idea of how I want it to look, but I’m letting the yarn and motifs I’ve chosen tell me how they want to be arranged. And I’m trying it on as I go, adjusting as needed. The only math is for the increases - the rest is instinct, trusting my mom’s surety of my skills.

This is now one of the most enjoyable pieces I’ve made, and one I’m most proud of, just like I know Mom would be of me.

I love a knitted hood! I thinks it’s my favorite type of head warmer. It doesn’t crush my hair (I can even keep it in a bun) and when it’s long like this one you can pull it under and up over your nose!
Pattern is the Into the Hood balaclava by Laura Nelkin.

I had the absolute privilege of being in Denali recently, and stopped into the beautiful Polychrome Fibers yarn store. She has a whole room dedicated to local yarns! I picked up 2 skeins of hand-dyed Dancing Skies Fiber Arts Super Bulky Lite in Vincent and Berry Crunch - they reminded me of the blues of the skies and glaciers, and the vibrant fall colors of the trees and plants. I decided to work a simple slip stitch pattern and to “fade” the colors together. I’m quite pleased at the outcome and am happy to say there is a matching hat on the way!

If you need me I’ll just be out here on the hammock listening to the wind chimes and working on a new lace sock design, cuz here in the northeast we need socks with air conditioning.

Too warm out to wear it yet, but this skirt has been quite some time in the making, including a frogged prototype. I’m very pleased with how it came out and the fit is perfection!
