Twenty four sessions. Five days. Free for 48 hours each, plus an encore weekend. If you have been meaning to sort out sock fit, finally understand lace charts, or work out what to do with that gorgeous skein you cannot commit to, this is the week.

Stretchy jeans crotch mends - continued!

These jeans needed double tambourine darns. Now, for those of you wondering what it looks like from the front, you can see that you can see it. And you can really only see it from a very particular angle from the back, or if the wearer is sitting with their legs opened wide. I think that’s a pretty fair trade off when you’re talking about keeping these quite expensive and well broken in jeans from ending up in a landfill!!

Stretchy jeans are comfy to wear but don’t hold up that great, especially in the inner thigh. Stretchy denim can also be a bit tricky to mend while maintaining the stretch. Here are my two favorite methods:

Tambourine darning - it is stretchy in all directions, and quite strong. I’ve used a scrap piece of worn stretchy jersey cotton as a patch because not only was there a hole, but the entire area was very worn. Better to get ahead of it now than to wait for another hole. I used a soft sashiko cotton thread for the stitching, which quickly becomes virtually unnoticeable to the wearer. The visible side looks like a firework burst!

Goma-shio darning - great for reinforcing worn areas. I used the same soft sashiko cotton thread, and since the wrong side stitches are longer than the right side, it makes a very soft fabric of its own which feels lovely next to the skin. The right side looks like little seeds.
