This is one of the first gifts I received from a student when I started substitute teaching. A paper guitar with a paper bracelet! Gotta cherish that imagination & kindness children can display. There’s really nothing like the age of discovery, when we don’t second guess our creations - we just do them.

At the Topanga Banjo/Fiddle Contest, I realized I did not bring the dowel for my limberjack. I accidentally brought a drumstick instead which did not work! Fortunately, someone passing by said “There’s plenty of sticks around here!” First one I tried worked like a charm. Even better than the dowel!

  • This book was born out of a challenge. One day I had an idea. I thought “What if I write a song that teaches about jug band music, using the alphabet song as the melody? Could I come up with a lyric for each letter?” I got out my guitar and a sheet of paper started to chip away at it. The song was mostly composed in a few days, though several revisions came later. After performing the song at a library concert, I realized it could work quite well as a book. It would be great for kids to see all these images come to life!
