Because machine loom fabrics dominate U.S. markets, many of us can only think about handloom fabric in the abstract.

People come into our shop asking if there are more fabrics in the back.
…if we stock multiple colors or different fabrications of a fabric.
…if we can reorder a larger quantity of a fabric.

The answer is always “Yes” if you can wait for human hands to make it.

Depending on the fabric, this could take two months to two years.

Handloom weaving, like all craft, challenges our relationship with time and a culture of instant gratification.

Imagine you’ve never seen a visible mending transfer before.

You pick up one of our packs in a shop.

What do you want to know?

The 10 most-liked comments will each receive a free mending transfer of their choice.

Our mending transfers are getting GTINs and barcodes, which means we’re redesigning the back of the packaging.

Initially our mending transfers were only in *our* retail space, so we modeled the back as a calling card for our new brick and mortar shop. Now our transfers are stocked in fabric stores, vintage stores, museum shops, and gift boutiques around the world, and we want to help customers understand what these mending transfers are.

If you’ve never seen one of our mending transfers before, what information would help you most?

The DESIGN pack
(Quiet. Simple. Just the facts.)
* focuses on the designs in the pack
* assumes some familiarity with the idea of visible mending transfers.

The DESIGN + SUPPORT pack
* focuses on the designs of the pack
* assumes no familiarity with the idea of visible mending.

The MANIFESTO + SUPPORT pack
* focuses on the WHY visible mending is important
* assumes no familiarity with the idea of visible mending.

What’s the first thing you’d look for on the back before deciding to buy?

Leave us your thoughts below. The 10 comments with the most likes will each receive a free mending transfer of your choice. Thank you for helping us build something better.

Natural indigo, 100% cotton, handloom woven in West Bengal

We don’t have to guess where this indigo was sourced.
We know. We’ve been there.

We don’t have to guess who maintained the indigo vat.
We know. We met them.

We’re so excited about this new collection of indigo fabrics we got in last week from Kolkata from, truly, one of our favorite makers in the world.

Between the fabrics you can see photos from Matthew’s trips to West Bengal and the indigo that goes into these fabrics

We surpassed 10,000 followers on Instagram this past week and thought it might be a good time to reintroduce ourselves.

Approved Textiles is the first fabric store to open on Philadelphia’s historic Fabric Row in nearly forty years. The shop is the product of a collaboration between an artist and a licensed social worker, opening in the fall of 2024.

We’re a fabric store that deeply cares about the intersection of clothing, craft, and sustainability. We care about the steps and processes it takes to arrive at a yard of fabric in a way that honors makers, farmers, and artisans, believing that this care creates trust in beautiful, timeless design.

A majority of our fabrics are sourced through personal relationships, not catalogues.

That’s why our work is guided by three core values:

Handmade.
Artisan Made.
Sustainably Made.
