Tennessee, we’re coming to the Nash Yarn Fest Nash Yarn Fest, 2027!

Mark your calendars: March 12–13 at the Fairgrounds Nashville.

My love for Tennessee runs statewide. From Knoxville to Memphis, I’ve got a story and a BBQ recommendation dotting I-40.

But I need your help: I’m a Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint loyalist in Nashville and have had Pat’s Hot Dust shipped up to Philadelphia for years. Last time I was in Nashville, I didn’t have a car, so I couldn’t get to every BBQ place. Where should I be going??

Actually, let’s make this interesting:

Bring me your best BBQ rub at the booth and I’ll trade you two mending transfers.

I want to know what Tennessee thinks is the *best* rub. Local, regional, your auntie’s favorite, whatever. I’m open to being converted. Bonus points if it’s best on poultry. THREE mending transfers if it’s delicious AND low sodium 😂

One rule: it needs to be commercially packaged and sealed. I’ve got to drive this back to Philadelphia to share with Matthew.

See you in March. Go Vols!

We’re about to change our hours back from shortened summer days. The one piece that will forever remain untouched: riposo.

From day one we’ve had riposo. The sticker on our window has three things: 1. Our logo 2. “Closed on Mondays” and 3. Riposo everyday from 2.00 to 3.00. We don’t even name when we’re open. (we should probably change that hahaha)

Part of being a small business means having to constantly advocate for yourself. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past year and a half: the work never ends. There’s always something to stock, make, inventory, or connect—in-store, back of house, and on social media.

“But I’ve come by the store during that time and you were open!”

One of two things happened:

1. we had bad personal boundaries that day.
2. We didn’t need a full hour to fill our cup back up.

Some days my boundaries are firm and I can -and have- turned away a rush of holiday shoppers on the first Saturday in December so I can find my equilibrium.

It’s also been kind of funny to us how foreign this concept has been to the American consumer. We’ve apparently been trained to expect everything to be available all the time. The idea that a store might just… close for an hour in the middle of the day seems to be a lot for some people.

Other days, we’re already in the shop and someone comes in and we stay open. We’re human. Riposo isn’t a magical force field that keeps people from walking through the door.

It’s just a boundary we’ve built into the business that gives us permission to stop.
And we really like that boundary

If there’s one truth about BaiLoom’s weavers, they’re not shy of color.

Last month, we got in 30+ handloom-woven pieces from them, and they have brightened up the store for the better

After selling out in 48 hours, we’ve added two final offerings of our Mask Making Class for the fall.

Because we already planned out our fall cycle, we had to get a little creative with squeezing these classes in. Which is why we decided to rebrand one of The Night Outs as a Spooky Night Out.

If you’re not familiar, The Night Out is an incredibly fun night blending craft, cocktails, and amazing food. All you have to do is show up ready to make masks, enjoy a mean charcuterie spread with drinks, and head to one of our favorite local restaurants for dinner after class. We’ll take care of everything.

Just show up.

Everyone’s favorite season has begun, and this year it’s handmade - Please join us for a mask making workshop at Approved Textiles! We’ll look at vintage costumes for inspiration, then use canvas, fabrics, thread, and anything else you’d like to create a custom mask for your spooky October adventures.

All materials are included, along with technical guidance from Matthew.

We leave for vacation tomorrow morning, and this rain shower that’s currently parked over the shop has given me a rare pause in the middle of the 37 things I still need to do before closing up for a full week.

I walked around the shop the way I used to when we first opened—trying to memorize, retain, and really see everything.

This shop is something I experience so often that I think I sometimes take it for granted. The fabrics, the objects, the corners, the little details that felt so impossible when we were building this place.

I snapped these photos as a reminder of their preciousness

Berkshires, Hudson Valley, Capital Region—we’re coming your way. 🧵

On September 19 we’re popping up at FleaHive Market in North Adams with a double-wide booth: half classroom, half supply shop.

If you’ve been following along from western Massachusetts, the Hudson Valley, or around Albany, this is your chance to mend with us without making the trip to Philadelphia.

Bring a well-loved garment and spend a couple of hours learning the techniques that have made our Visible Mending Workshop one of the most popular classes at the shop. Then hang around, browse our handloom fabrics, sashiko supplies, visible mending transfers, and come say hi.

We don’t make it up this way very often so we’re pretty excited about this one. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to drive over to North Adams… maybe this is it.

See you soon.

Night Out on 9th was so busy I didn’t get any photos of our booth! Thanks, South Street District.

So here’s the calm-after-the-storm content

Here’s what’s on the calendar for the rest of summer at Approved Textiles:

====Summer hours start this week: 11–5 every day except Monday, when we’re closed.

Don’t forget that riposo happens sometime during the 2 o’clock hour. We usually time it around foot traffic, so if folks are already in the shop, we’re not kicking anyone out. Just know it’s best to avoid stopping by during that hour if you can, so we have a little time to recharge.
