Children with high self-esteem feel confident, appreciated, and worthy.
Low self-esteem can stunt your childâs potential in every way (academics, personal, and social)
Here are a few ways to help nurture your childâs self-esteem.
1. EMPOWERMENT- give them options. Allow them to choose what their heart/mind inclines to most.
2. ENCOURAGEMENT- let them know their feelings and desires are valid and necessary. Encourage them to pursue their ideas and work hard to accomplish it.
3. GIVE THEM RESPONSIBILITIES- teach them that play is good but so is seriousness. Teach them independence, the value of money, and how to maintain their moral conduct without your presence.
4. FOCUS ON THEIR STRENGTHS- Yes, we know they have the potential to be scholars, doctors, and lawyers. However, they may not want that for themselves. Focus on what theyâre good at and find ways to increase that skill. Even if itâs gaming, the technical advancements are in their immediate future. Maybe itâs a foreign profession to you, but itâs absolutely not for them.
5. OFFER APPROPRIATE PRAISE- Flattering with unnecessary compliments can create an egotistical personality; which can lead to a depressed and unfulfilled demeanor when plans fail, instead praise them when needed and not overly excessive.
i.e., Your child is a runner & he/she has won their first race, the best compliment is âIâm very proud of what youâve achieved. Your hard work & dedication really paid off. Youâre getting better & better each dayâ instead of âYou are the best runner in the entire world.â
The effects on the mind will be different.
We can do this! It takes a village.
6. DONâT OVER-PROTECT- Of course we want to protect them from all the harms of this worldâŚ. BUT we can not. Teach independence early & good decision making. We donât always need to interfere with quarrels. Give them examples of the right and wrong ways to handle disputes. Allow them to figure out the solutions.
7. SPEND QUALITY TIME- we all need intimacy with our loved ones. Parenting is so much of teaching that this aspect can sometimes be neglected. Make quality time a priority. It teaches the love and compassion we need in todays world.
