For all those who question us for flying the Pan-African Flag in front of our store “The Movement”. Here is a little context. Considering the fact there are all kinds of flags being flown on our block, I’m not sure why flying our Red Black and Green flag is so controversial?
Here is our official statement on the matter. Please read it to the end and respond respectfully.
Thanks so much for your time and your support.
One of our most important goals is to always leave our community better than we inherited it.
When we moved into 7133 Germantown Ave eight plus years ago, it was the former home of the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. It was a space filled with diagrams and maps and plans for a successful campaign. The entire space felt like a home for freedom seekers. Can you imagine the conversations that took place inside this space where an American woman was preparing to become the first Woman President of this country!!??
We stepped into the space and we transformed it into what you see today. Following in the spirit of those who occupied the space before us. In a larger context, we stepped into a neighborhood with a long tradition of fighting for Freedom-with Abolitionist and early American examples of Black excellence.
The Movement (7133 Germantown Ave) stands on ground that helped shape the fight for freedom in America. Just steps away, Germantown was home to the 1688 Germantown Quaker Petition Against Slavery—the first formal protest against slavery—and part of the network of the Underground Railroad that guided freedom seekers to safety.
Organizations like the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, along with Black-led institutions such as the Free African Society and the African Methodist Episcopal Church, built the foundation of resistance, unity, and economic empowerment that still defines this city today.
That’s why The Movement proudly flies the Pan-African flag—a symbol of strength, heritage, and unity. It represents a legacy that lives on through culture, entrepreneurship, and community.
Supporting The Movement means supporting more than a business—it means investing in history, culture, and a future built on creativity and connection.
For those to whom the Red Black and Green flag is offensive. I invite you inside our space to dialogue. I hope when you step inside our space you can feel the love and effort each artisan has placed into each and every product. I urge you to take special note of the recycled gas pipes we used to create the clothing racks of the entire store.
Thank you,
