I watched one of our students take a picture of the straight lines she had just sewn in class, and I thought, yes, take the picture. Be proud of those lines. 🥰

Sometimes we’re so focused on getting to the point where we can make the pants, the dress, or whatever garment we have in our heads that we forget to appreciate everything we’re learning along the way.

Be proud when you sew your first straight line.

Be proud when you figure out the zigzag stitch.

Be proud when you start playing around with decorative stitches.

Be proud of that first buttonhole and that zipper you were nervous about putting in.

Because every one of those little things is you learning how to sew.

The finished garment will come. But there’s so much happening before you ever get there. You’re learning your machine. You’re figuring things out. You’re making mistakes and trying again. And eventually, things that required ALL of your concentration start to feel a little more natural.

So yes, take a picture of those straight lines.😍📸

We have a beginner sewing cohort starting THIS Thursday. Yes, this Thursday, September 3rd from 6–8 PM. 🧵

And if you’ve ever said, “I want to learn how to sew,” I want you there.

Because now is the time.

Not next year. Not when the kids are out of the house. Not when work becomes less demanding.

Noooooooooow. 😂

Because let’s face it, something else will probably come up next year. The kids may not leave the house (I’m not wishing that on you, but in this economy…ummmmm 😂), and your job is probably not going to magically become less demanding.

You and I both know that, so let’s just face it. sigh

There will always be a reason to put off the things we want to do for ourselves.

So if learning to sew has been on your heart for a while, come learn with us. You don’t have to know anything before you walk through the door. That’s why we’re here.

Our September Foundations of Sewing cohort meets September 3, 10, 17 & 24 from 6–8 PM at The SEWcial Café in Frederick.

✨✨The SEWcial Café Community Spotlight ✨✨

I’m so excited to continue highlighting the amazing women in our community 💗

This week we’re shining a light on Jen G. 🧵✨

Jen has only been part of The SEWcial Café community for four months, but she has already made such a huge impact. She is incredibly helpful, thoughtful, and generous, and she is always thinking about the other women in our community. Jen never seems to show up empty-handed 😂 Whether it’s fabric, sewing notions, or something she made specifically for you, she is always sharing a little something with someone. That generosity says so much about who she is.

Now, does Jen have a slight addiction to buying fabric and sewing machines? Absolutely 😂 But in this community… WHO DOESN’T?! Honestly, that’s just one more reason she fits right in.

What I’m most proud of is how much she has grown in such a short amount of time. Jen came to us as a very beginner sewist, and now she’s making dresses on her own! That’s what happens when you keep showing up, keep learning, and keep practicing. Confidence comes from practice, and it has been so much fun watching hers grow.

Beyond sewing, Jen has also become my absolute favorite person to get ice cream with 🍦😂 Some friendships are built over fabric and sewing machines… and apparently some are built over ice cream too!

Jen, I’m so very proud of you. Thank you for being so generous, for always thinking of others, and for bringing such a wonderful spirit into The SEWcial Café. You may have only been here for four months, but it already feels like years.

I can’t wait to see what you make next! Keep sewing, keep creating, and please keep inviting me to get ice cream! 💗

Did you buy a serger because you were excited to take your sewing to the next level…and now it’s been sitting there untouched because you have no idea how to thread it? 👀 I know that machine looks intimidating with all those threads, but you CAN learn how to use it. And once you understand what it can do, it can completely change the way you finish and construct your garments.

Only 4 seats left for our September Foundations of Sewing cohort! Thursdays, September 3, 10, 17, & 24th, 6-8pm at The SEWcial Café in Frederick, MD.

But instead of me telling you what to expect, here’s what people who have taken the class are saying:

Thank you to the Delaplaine Arts Center for inviting me to be a guest for your Art at Noon series! I met so many wonderful people and had the opportunity to share more about The SEWcial Café, my work, and my research on inclusive design. If you’re in Frederick, MD and love the arts, consider becoming a member of the Delaplaine. They have wonderful exhibitions, tons of workshops, and so many opportunities to connect with the creative community here in Frederick. I’m grateful to be part of such a vibrant arts community. There comes a time in every sewist’s life when someone picks up their fabric shears and uses them to cut something that is NOT fabric. 😩 Paper. Cardboard. A package. Whatever possessed them in that moment, the damage has been done. This has broken up happy homes, ended friendships, and strained relationships between parents and their children. 😂

A few weeks ago, some of the students in this video didn’t know how to operate a sewing machine. Now they can thread their machines, wind and insert a bobbin, identify the different functions of the machine, sew straight lines and curves, and they’re getting ready to make their very first sewn project, a tote bag!

I love seeing how excited my students get when they realize, “Wait…I can actually do this.” You don’t have to walk into Foundations already knowing how to sew. That’s what you’re coming to learn. We start at the beginning and build your skills each week so you become more comfortable and confident using the sewing machine.

So, if your machine is still sitting in the box or tucked away in a closet, or you’ve been wanting to learn but keep wondering if you can really do it, come learn with us. You may be surprised by how much you’re able to do in four weeks.

Our next Foundations of Sewing workshop meets Thursdays, September 3, 10, 17 & 24 from 6–8 PM at The SEWcial Café in Frederick, MD.
