True story.

I got kicked out of sewing school when I was 12 years old because I missed too many Saturday classes.

To be fair, waking up early on a Saturday felt unreasonable at the time. 😂

Thankfully, that wasn’t the end of my sewing journey.

I kept sewing, kept learning, kept creating, and kept believing in myself.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that other people don’t get to decide what’s possible for you... not a teacher, school, boss, or critic.

Count yourself in when others count you out.

You might surprise everyone.

Including yourself. 💗

From packing boxes… to sewing together virtually… to everybody twirling around in their finished Leah Cover Ups. 🥰 This is one of my favorite parts of the Designer Membership. I get to design the pattern, send everything out, sew along with members, and then watch everyone make the project their own. The Leah Cover Up is extra special because it’s named after my sister, Charleah. In fact, all of my patterns are named after people I love.

Seeing everyone finish theirs and put their own spin on it made my heart so happy. Okay, I need to know… which version are you wearing?

✨✨The SEWcial Café Community Spotlight ✨✨

I’m so excited to continue highlighting the amazing women in our community 💗

This week’s spotlight is especially close to my heart because we’re celebrating someone who means so much to me: Nahkí M., founder of Living Ikhan.

First, I have to thank Vanessa for introducing me to this beautiful human. I am so grateful our paths crossed because Nahkí has truly become family to me. The name Living Ikhan (Living Icon) suits her perfectly because I genuinely believe she is going to be an icon during her time on this earth. She’s my baby, and I love her so much 💗

When I first met Nahkí, she was only about 15 years old. Now she’s a whole grown adult, and watching her evolve into the woman she is today has been such a gift. She is smart, talented, creative, and ambitious. Back when I was in Philly, we were inseparable. We spent countless hours sewing, patternmaking, creating, learning, and dreaming together. Some days we’d spend entire days side by side, talking about life and fashion while building her skills.

One of the things that always stood out to me was the love and support surrounding her. The same kind of unwavering support I received from my own mom growing up, I watched her mother and father pour into her. It was beautiful to witness and helped shape the confident young woman she has become. Shout out to them for co-parenting with me 😂

Today, Nahkí creates beautiful overgarments and custom clothing through her brand, Living Ikhan. Her work is thoughtful, well-crafted, and absolutely gorgeous.

Kí, words can’t fully express how proud I am of you. Watching you grow into the designer and woman you are today has been one of the greatest joys. I love you so much, and I can’t wait to see all the amazing things ahead of you 💗🧵

If you’re looking for quality, beautifully crafted custom garments, be sure to connect with Nahkí and support Living Ikhan. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

We’re officially halfway through our Foundations of Sewing Workshop, and it’s been so much fun watching everyone’s progress. What’s amazing is that no one came into the class with sewing experience. Now they’re confidently threading machines, sewing projects, and zooming along like they’ve been doing it much longer than a few weeks. 😊 This is exactly why I love teaching beginners. Watching that moment when fear turns into confidence never gets old.

If you’ve been wanting to learn how to sew but aren’t sure where to start, this is your sign that you don’t need experience. You just need a place to begin. Our next Foundations of Sewing cohort starts July 2nd, and we’d love to have you join us.

✨ Come as you are. We’ll teach you the rest.

I’m so excited to introduce the newest Designer Membership project… the Leah Cover Up!

This versatile piece can be worn over a swimsuit on a beach day or styled as a beautiful addition to your everyday wardrobe.

What makes this pattern especially meaningful to me is its name. The Leah Cover Up is named after my sister, Charleah. ❤️ If you’ve been part of my sewing community for a while, you may have noticed that I name all of my patterns after people I love. It’s my way of honoring the people who have shaped my life, supported my dreams, and inspired me along the way. So every pattern has a story. And this one is especially close to my heart.

Today is our sew-along, and I can’t wait to see everyone’s Leah Cover Ups come to life!

Can we talk about the flower arch for a minute? 🌸✨ We’ve gotten so many compliments on it since the grand opening, and every single one makes me smile. What you see is a beautiful flower arch. What I see is Dee and me spending hours bringing an idea to life. There was a lot of planning, a lot of flowers, and a lot of hard work behind the scenes to make it happen. There were definitely moments when we weren’t sure how it was all going to come together, but we kept going because we wanted to create something special for our community. Now, seeing people stop to admire it, take photos, and tell us how much they love it makes every minute worth it.

A huge thank you to for helping bring this vision to life. We worked hard on this one, and we’re so happy it’s adding a little extra beauty and joy to The SEWcial Café. 💕

📸 Have you taken a photo in front of the flower arch yet? Share your picture in the comments or tag us in your post. We’d love to see your photos!

✨✨The SEWcial Café Community Spotlight ✨✨

This week we’re shining a light on Charlene T.C.🧵✨

Charlene has been a part of our sewing community for over 9 years and is also a founding member of The SEWcial Café from our Philadelphia days. Over the years, it has been such a pleasure watching her grow and create. Charlene loves making clothes for herself and her children, and there’s something so special about being able to create handmade garments for the people you love most. Every project is made with care, creativity, and a whole lot of love.

One of the things that makes our community so special is the amazing people who show up, learn, create, and support one another, and Charlene has been doing exactly that for years. Her presence, dedication to the craft, and continued support have helped make The SEWcial Café what it is today.

Charlene, thank you for being such an important part of this community from the very beginning. We appreciate you, we celebrate you, and we’re so grateful you’ve been on this journey with us 💗🧵 Keep creating beautiful things for yourself, your family, and the world around you. We love having you as part of The SEWcial Café family!
