DIARY OF AN ESCAPISTA — Giulio Rimondi
When a journey becomes a work of art.
IV — THE WORK
45°28′N · 9°11′E
“Some journeys come to an end. Others ask to continue.”
— Giulio Rimondi, Notes of an Escapist
After the trials, the attempts, the imperfections, the journey finally finds its form.
A print, at last complete: the sea once crossed becomes a sea to contemplate. What was once a course, then a gaze, then a material process, now hangs quietly on a wall. Those who pass by have no idea how many miles, how much light, and how many discarded sheets lie behind that blue.
“Since departure, it has been one single day lasting 600 hours and 21 minutes.”
But a work of art is never the final destination.
It is the moment when the journey changes form once again: it no longer belongs to the one who made it, but to the one who stands before it.

Giulio Rimondi is an artist, humanist photographer, and sailor. When he’s ashore, he lives on Agistri, a small Greek island. For years, he has sailed the world’s oceans, pursuing an artistic research project on climate change between the Arctic and Antarctica.
Together with Escapista, he began a correspondence to tell a story that is rarely seen: how a journey slowly transforms into a work of art. A chance to follow an artist’s creative process, from lived experience to its final form.
