Question Asked: What new programs or changes would you bring to better protect residents in Pipestone County?

Answer: One idea I have been exploring is how the Sheriff’s Office can work with Pipestone County EMS and our other local ambulance services to improve emergency medical response throughout our rural communities.

Some of our deputies serve as volunteer EMTs or paramedics when they are off duty. However, while working as deputies, they are currently equipped and provide only a more basic level of first responder care. They do not have the same medical equipment, medications, policies, or medical oversight available to a traditional EMS provider.

As Sheriff, I want the Sheriff’s Office to work hand in hand with our EMS agencies to explore a program that would allow properly trained, licensed, and qualified deputies to provide care up to a paramedic level when responding to medical emergencies.

In rural areas, a deputy is often the first emergency responder to arrive. Allowing qualified deputies to use their advanced medical training could provide a higher level of care during those critical first minutes while an ambulance is still responding.

This program would not replace our great EMS agencies. It would only strengthen our partnership with them, support their lifesaving work, and help ensure residents receive the best care possible.

I have seen other law enforcement agencies successfully provide this type of service in other rural parts of Minnesota. With proper coordination, training, policies, medical oversight, equipment, and teamwork, I believe we could bring this valuable service to Pipestone County while still remaining fiscally responsible.

Public safety is about working together, using the skills and resources already available, and finding practical ways to better protect the people we serve.
