Dan Simplicio / Zuni

A beautiful assortment of pieces by Zuni Silversmith, Dan Simplicio. Currently available online and in gallery.

Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry.

Harry H Begay / Navajo

Harry H. Begay comes from the Navajo tribe, and has specialized in handmade Native American jewelry since the early 1970s. His silversmithing style is curated through ingot silver that has been mined from mountains and caves from across the country. The turquoise he uses is also the best in business, which results in a rich colored stone.

Julian Lovato / Santo Domingo Pueblo

Julian Lovato was one of the most acclaimed pueblo jewelers in the 20th century.

Starting his career making traditional earrings he evolved into one of the early native modernists while working at Frank Patania’s Thunderbird Shop.

Utilizing ever changing designs and exceptional quality stones he created in a three dimensional look which he called “raised dimensional jewelry design.”

Charles Loloma / Hopi

When asked by his biographer what he would like to be remembered for, he said, “What I’d like to be known for is beauty.” Significantly, ‘Loloma’ translates to ‘beauty’ in the Hopi language. Charles Loloma passed away in 1991, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists and admirers to this very day.

Perry Shorty / Diné (Navajo)

Perry Shorty is a Navajo silversmith known for his hand-forged jewelry that reflects the classic early Navajo style. Using traditional techniques of the first, second, and third phase jewelers (1880-1940’s), Perry hand-extrudes silver wire, applies intricate stamp work, and uses files, chisels and appliqué to create complex designs on the surface of his pieces. His work could easily be celebrated as a revival of the elegant jewelry of the 1940’s with its meticulously hand fashioned art nouveau appeal.
