🐎 The Púca: Ireland's Mysterious Shapeshifter
On lonely Irish roads, particularly around Halloween, people once told stories of a mysterious creature that could change its appearance at will.
It was known as the Púca, one of the most unpredictable beings in Irish folklore.
The Púca could appear as a black horse, a goat, a bull, a dog or even a human figure. Its appearance varied depending on where the story was told.
Some tales described it as a frightening trickster, carrying unsuspecting travellers on wild journeys across hills, bogs and fields before abandoning them far from home.
Other stories portrayed it as surprisingly helpful.
The Púca was particularly associated with Samhain, when supernatural beings were believed to roam more freely.
There was even an old Irish belief that blackberries should not be eaten after Halloween because the Púca had spoiled them!
Not entirely good, not entirely evil, and never quite what it seemed.
The Púca remains one of Ireland's most fascinating folkloric creatures.
