One mistake was all that stood between Walter Johnson and perfection.
On this day in 1920 at Fenway Park, the Washington Senators’ legendary ace threw the only no-hitter of the 1920 season, shutting down the Boston Red Sox in a 1-0 masterpiece. Johnson struck out 10 batters, and with two outs in the ninth inning, an error by teammate Bucky Harris spoiled what would have been a perfect game.
Ironically, it was Harris who also delivered the game’s only RBI with the hit that gave Washington its lone run.
The victory became one of the greatest performances of Johnson’s Hall of Fame career—but it came at a cost. Shortly afterward, he developed the first sore arm of his career, changing the course of the remainder of his 1920 season.
