Howdy friends, I have a little update for y’all:

I am fortunate in many ways to still be working during this strange time, and if anything, I now have more work than before the covid crisis began. Because stores are shut down, I am not able to thrift certain supplies for making hats, and because I don’t rely on this income for my livelihood, it hasn’t felt important to be trying to sell right now. There is a lot of privilege in that statement — if you’re able to support independent artists and local businesses right now, they are depending on it!! (Check out if you need some inspo)

As for me, like many others I have been making masks for my coworkers and family. I ran out of elastic after ~15 masks so here’s my trusty machine with 80 feet of homemade bias tape for fabric ties. Hopefully when I make it through the masks I’ve already committed to making (currently I’ve made 27/50), I can shift toward making masks for others who need them.

with love,
emma / somerville hat co

getting the brim just right is often the hardest part of making a hat — it can also be the difference of a really amazing piece and one that’s just okay. lots of time and attention go into each one!
