“Asante Sana, San Jose Airport!” 🇰🇪❤️

From a small village in Kenya to travelers passing through Silicon Valley, these women have something to say.

And they wanted to say it themselves.

Meet some of the incredible women artisans of Wanyororo B, Kenya, whose handmade beaded bags, created from recycled glass and plastic, have found a home at ShopConsciously inside San José Mineta International Airport. ✈️

When San Jose Airport welcomed ShopConsciously, they did more than make space for another retail store.

They helped create access to a market that women in communities like Wanyororo B would otherwise struggle to reach.

For these women, every order represents work, income, and the opportunity to build a more financially secure future for themselves and their families.

And for us, that's what meaningful partnership looks like.

Not charity. Opportunity. Access. A market.

To our partners at San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) , thank you for believing that airport retail can do more than sell beautiful things. It can connect communities, create livelihoods, and give women entrepreneurs a place in the global economy.

In 2021, a virtual introduction brought us together. Five years later, we were breaking bread, sharing stories and laughing together in Nakuru, Kenya.

Last month, we finally met the incredible women behind one of our bestselling products, that are available at San José Mineta International Airport (SJC).

It all started when Sandra Hawi joined the Women Enabled Enterprises programme in 2021 and her product was selected for ShopConsciously. What began online has grown into a relationship that connects women artisans in rural Kenya to customers in the US.

And getting to meet them in person? Such a special experience.

We shared meals, laughed, cried and tried our hand at making their famous bags (an epic failure on our part!). These beautiful bags, made from recycled glass beads, gave us an even greater appreciation for the skill and craftsmanship these women bring to their work.

But the most meaningful part was hearing their stories and learning how access to new markets has made a difference in their lives, families and livelihoods.

As we celebrate 5 years, this visit was a reminder of what happens when women in rural economies get the opportunity to take their talents beyond their communities and onto a global stage.

Because economic development isn’t just about products reaching international shelves. It’s about creating opportunities for women to earn an income through their skills, support their families and contribute to their communities.

We left Nakuru with a deeper appreciation for the women behind the products and a renewed sense of why this work matters.

Here’s to another 5 years of connecting local talent with global markets, and to the women whose stories make it all worthwhile.

Thank you for believing in our craft.

Through your purchases, young girls in our communities can dream bigger and see the potential in making products with their own hands. Your support has made it possible for women like us to put food on the table this Christmas and buy little gifts for our families, spreading joy in ways that matter most.
