For our next Mill Fest vendor introduction, we have and their ✨spectacular✨ range of tonal yarns!

Sea Change Fibers was born of a desire to dye tonal colors on non-superwash bases, primarily from climate-responsible producers. The business began in 2016 in Portland, OR, spent seven years in the Monterey Bay Area, and is now back home in Portland.

Sea Change Fibers is a name that reflects both our West Coast location and our commitment to helping the health of the earth as it changes. With colors inspired by the Pacific Ocean and our coastal/mountain forests and flowers, Sea Change Fibers yarn uses climate-beneficial wool, produced with care and a commitment to protecting our environment. The result is lovely to look at and even lovelier to work with. 🧶

Vibrant tonal colors are a signature of Sea Change Fibers, and we value how crafting brings sea change to your life. 🐙

The yarn coming to the Mill Fest will be non-superwash yarn that is hand-dyed in Milwaukie, OR, with bases ranging from lace to aran weight. There are Merino, BFL, and Cormo bases, plus some with a mix of silk and silk/linen/hemp.

We're counting the days until the inaugural Mill Fest in November, and we're excited to start introducing you to the lovely vendors you'll get to see at the mill. 🎉

First up is and the dyer behind all this ✨gorgeousness✨— Stephania Fregosi!

Steph has been hand dyeing yarn and fiber in the Pacific Northwest since 2008. She specializes in over-dyeing merino-yak blends in rich, ombre and jewel gradient tones. She brings her sustainability background to her work by sourcing high-quality, low-impact yarn and fiber, working to spotlight the best of what is available to artisanal crafters.

In addition to merino-yak blends, Steph likes to work with low-impact fibers for spinners and felters, such as polwarth and Falkland merino, both of which come from the Falkland Islands (known for their eco- and animal-friendly approaches to land-care and animal management). She also enjoys working with climate-beneficial Rambouillet, a fibershed-certified product from Northern California.

It is time for our October Breed Box Colorway Reveal! This month is special, it is Kasteyl's birthday month! Mer was kind enough to dye up a colorway based on inspiration photos and vibes. The breed you ask? One of Kasteyl's favorites: Clun Forest! We have teamed up with Sweet Home Farms in Gaston, OR to bring you a breed box that was grown, milled, and dyed within a 40 mile radius. You can't get much more local than that.

Grab this month's box in natural white or Libra, baby. Our no-frills fiber breed box is available for a single purchase, a recurring monthly subscription, or a quarterly subscription (at a slight discount). Human mistakes and learning moments here at the dye house. Check out the way forgetting acid in the dye bath impacts the finished fiber. Lowering the ph of the water allows the dye to bond with the fiber. If it doesn’t bond it will swim into an homogeneous mess. It’s a cool lesson to see in real time. Honestly, it might not be the colorway we intended but this warm brown looks beautiful.

Want to learn to spin?! There is ONE spot left in Kasteyl's Spinning Basics course starting TOMORROW! This course takes you from zero experience to a skein of handpsun two ply yarn in three classes. It is held at Seattle Yarn in West Seattle and wheel rentals are available. That's right, you don't even need to own your own spinning wheel!

Something we've been working on for quite a while now and we're super excited to introduce...

This Shetland BFL Cross Roving is our first venture into what we call our "wool share" program. We know that the last thing shepherds need is another bill. The sheep have that covered. Our Wool Share program splits a clip between us and the producer based on processing costs and fleece values. We get access to an amazing array of Pacific Northwest grown wool and the shepherds get processed fiber ready to dye, spin, or sell, based on their needs, all with no mill bill. This program relies on the mill being able to bring this fiber to market so we can continue to support the shepherds that keep us all in what we love - wool.

This Shetland BFL is a delight to handle and spin. This lot was mostly grays and white, allowing us to blend them and create fiber with a lovely hand in a soft natural heathered gray. The fiber is silky from the BFL lineage with a decent staple length while having more spring than you would expect, thanks to the Shetland. When sample spinning we preferred to use a short forward or backward draw. It bloomed beautifully as a two ply and has a lovely drape.

We also chose to introduce repeatable colorways in this process, so you'll notice they have names! Mer did an amazing job concocting dyes and names. Let us know which are your faves in the comments.
