Time to Meet the Millers! We've gained so many new followers since we started this journey last year. We've grown as a team and as individuals, let's introduce the faces of Wool for the People, the folks working the mill to bring you amazing yarn and fiber.

First up is Lucy!

Lucy (they/them) is the Wool for the People Mill Tech. They started as a skirt and scour operator. In the months they've been with us they have learned to operate the picker and are currently training on the card as well as the draw frame. Lucy was our first hire and is a key member of the milling team.

Find out all about what’s going on at WOOL FOR THE PEOPLE! On October 24th, they’ll be hosting a tour-talk called “Resilient Roots: PNW Wool from Pasture to Craft,” 10 AM-2 PM. Wool for the People

This free drop-in event will feature instruction on the method of drop spinning, introductions to locally grown and developed sheep breeds, tours of our mill, and social gathering space for spinning. Attendees are welcome to join us throughout the day for opportunities to try one of the oldest pieces of human technology, the drop spindle, and learn to make yarn by hand.

Spinning has long been a practice of community space and companionship and as such we prioritize creating space for our community to gather and spin. We will host a spinning circle throughout the day.

Participants may keep the yarn they make. They may purchase a drop spindle and fiber of their own if they wish.

Hi, that would be me, Jessica, the mill's newbie crew (crewbie?) member, who clearly needs to proofread more carefully when she hasn't had enough coffee. 🙋🏻‍♀️

We'll be welcoming the extremely talented Erin Eggenburg of to the mill on Friday, November 20th!

Students will learn to mend denim and woven fabric using the beautiful hand-stitching technique we all love. 👖 This hands-on, beginner-friendly class covers the information and skills you need to get started, including making a Sashiko patch. You can even bring your own project to get individualized tips!

Today is the last day to order the November Breed Box! We are featuring Finnsheep this month. Our dyed colorway is on a white base for gorgeous, saturated colors. Our natural colored box is going to be a random selection of light, medium, or dark roving.

This wool hails from a small farm in Lewiston, Idaho and it's processed here in Portland, OR. If you're looking for a no-frills fiber subscription box, you're in the right place! Check out the equipment we’re working to bring to the mill!

We’ll profile each part of this kit over the next few days because these machines are really cool.

Scouring is the step of washing wool and removing lanolin, the greasy stuff that keeps sheep dry. It’s a huge bottleneck at every size mill. Those of us that do it in house spend a ton of time scouring. There’s only one option in the US to send it to which is in Texas.

This machine upgrade will increase our scouring capacity sixfold per load with an enormous labor savings. The impact will be huge, especially on the costs associated with getting wool clean. Passing those savings on to shepherds and indie dyers is an exciting prospect.

We’ll profile each part of this kit over the next few days because these machines are really cool.

We’re upgrading our capacity at each step so we can produce yarn at scale. We’re building systems that allow us to buy more local wool and send it out the door in more forms: ready for retail, custom bases for indie dyers, weaving yarns, and (of course!) amazing fibers for hand-spinning.

We aren’t getting rid of our small capacity systems, we’re adding large scale.

We can’t think of a better way to help local wool producers.

We are working with Amtrak on a few options (including a private car 😎) to get folks from Washington down to Portland for MillFest on Saturday, November 7th. We are in the planning phases and if you're interested, we'd love to hear from you!

The mill is open every Tuesday evening for craft night, and we'd love to see you there! 🧶

We support all flavors of craftiness, so bring whatever you're working on: knitting, spinning, crochet, EPP, embroidery, jewelry making—fiber not required. Heck, you could just show up to hang out with other makers. We're not fussy. We are "for the people," after all. 😉

The classroom is spacious, so you're not restricted to lap-sized WIPs—you can even bring your wheel! This is the only time the Wool for the People shop is open for in-person browsing, too, so it's a two-fer.

Weekly craft night is Tuesday from 4-8pm at the mill in SE Portland. Parking can be a bit of a challenge at times, but Tri-Met bus lines 14 and 70 both stop three blocks from our front door. Come get crafty with us!
