Stitches in Rhythm Quilt Studio Dorene Dundas - offering Longarm quilting services - Quilter & designer, classical pianist, book lover, bike rider, wife and mom of 33+ years

My name is Dorene Dundas, and I love to quilt! Choosing fabric... cutting it apart... sewing it back together... quilting on "Millie" - my APQS Millennium longarm quilt machine... even binding... participating in the process of a design in my head to completion is such a delight. I am a wife of 31+ years, mom of 3 - educated them all at home, classically trained pianist, music director and colla

borative pianist, lover of books and biking, and a recent joyful discovery has been working in the sewing room with my youngest daughter, passing on any of my knowledge (limited as it may be! always learning!) for this creative art. We are God's "poiema" - his workmanship, poetry, masterpiece -(Ephesians 2:10) and I believe every creative work I participate in is a reflection of His creative nature.

Table runner time!! I made these two very different table runners for my Mom. She had requested specific sizes and colors…. I got to play with ideas and these were the result. First time quilting smaller pieces on “Millie” and I’m pleased with how well it worked. I learn something new with every project and this time learned how bad of an idea it is to place small scissors on the batting while quilting…. I will leave the rest to your imagination for now… 🤣😂

I affectionately call this "ugly quilt"... 😂 I began piecing these blocks when we lived in Indiana over 23 years ago.. Then, at some point during our first life in North Idaho, I chose fabric for sashing and the border, planned the quilt top.. pieced it together.. then set it aside for years and years. I took a good look at it early last fall and wondered "what in the world was I thinking with this sashing and border fabric?!?! I don't even like them!" But that was my close up view. When I took a pic of it and walked away, coming back to view later, I realized how much I love it.. but by then I was calling it "ugly quilt". LOL!!! I quilted it on "Millie", branching out from loops and circles. The first "feathered" design I did I took out with a seam ripper and started over. Sometimes it takes trial and error. Then it requires taking a deep breath and committing to it, not stopping until it's finished. Walking away - coming back - and now I love my quilt. :) The final step was binding.. found a super deep wine color that finished it off so well, tying in the border more with the fabrics in the blocks. This is the saga of quilts that have fabrics from three different decades and locations. 😁 I still call it "ugly quilt" as it does make me laugh when I think of the journey to completion.

Binding "heirloom" quilts... this past summer I had the honor of binding two charming quilts for my friend Christine. These two quilts were hand appliquéd and hand quilted by ladies in a church for Christine and her sister - when they were babies. Sadly - the quilts were never finished! The fabrics and designs are beautiful! They were amazingly preserved (clearly never used - just stored away all these years) and passed down to Christine, who now has daughters and grandchildren of her own. She trusted me to take these quilts and find binding fabric and finish them so they can either be used or displayed. So much fun to work on such treasures!!! This is one thing I love about the art of quilting - the history and treasures they become when passed down from generation to generation.

recent project - conception to completion - my daughter and I made a quilt using fabrics from a Riley Blake National Parks collection. This was a fun and challenging project! We chose fabrics we liked from the collection first, then designed the quilt. Perhaps a backwards way to go about the project. 🤣 Each "postcard" had to be "fussy cut" out of the yard of fabric.. blocks assembled.. design laid out on my new flannel design board (THANK YOU JASON!) and then completed. I used an overall "water/topography" wavy pattern for the quilting. Quite satisfying to watch something come together after having nothing but fabrics and an idea of a design at the start.

Another Christmas quilt I had the honor of working on. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that my mother-in-law, Judi, taught me how to quilt over 30 years ago. I have since discovered many of my Mom's sisters also quilt - I love taking part in this heritage. I used an all-over design of loops and stars on this quilt also, with thread that looks gold. I love the result!

This is a recent quilt I finished for my friend, Jennifer. She did a beautiful job on this quilt, and it was great fun to help finish it. I used a "loops and snowflakes" edge to edge design. The binding is not finished in any of these photos...

WELCOME to Delightful Designs Quilt Studio! I learned to quilt over 30 years ago. Among my first projects was a queen sized quilt - hand appliquéd and hand quilted. I learned quickly this was not my preferred method for finishing projects. Through the years I have had a mid-arm quilting machine and used regular sewing machines... not satisfied with either, all my quilt tops were set aside to "finish later". I recently acquired an APQS Millennium (aka "Millie") longarm quilting machine and am finally finishing quilts that I began over 20 years ago. :) I love the creative process along with the challenges of each new project. I offer longarm quilt services for those desiring to finish their projects - those set aside for "finishing later" as well as the new!
