This Memorial Day weekend, I find myself reflecting on the heroes I served beside more than two decades ago.

“Gone but never forgotten” is a phrase I heard often growing up, but it wasn’t until deployment that I truly understood the weight those words carry.

John Ogburn III. Carrie French. Virgil Case. Ronald Wood. Travis Arndt.

Not a day goes by that I don’t think about them. Their loss — and the sacrifices carried by so many military families remain close to my heart.

This weekend, I also remember the veterans and service members who continue to fight battles long after war ends. Some wounds are visible. Many are not.

And I remember those we lost here at home, whether due to illness or the pain of war that lingered long after we were home. Jeffrey Daily. Sheldon Loveless. Doc Paul Morton. Major Taylor. Michael “Wally” Wolverton.

My heart remains with all of their families today and always.

These were/are not just names on a memorial wall. They were sons, a daughter, friends, soldiers and airmen, and brothers- and sisters-in-arms. They laughed with us, served beside us, sacrificed for this nation, and will never be forgotten.

I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have served alongside such extraordinary men and women.

Freedom isn’t free. 🇺🇸

God bless our nation. And God bless our military. Every single one. Bring them safely home.
