Hi folks! Thank you for the resumes sent to us this week, oddly enough we’ve gotten 3. But alas, we are not hiring at this time. We all work for free! 😂 It seems oddly scammy too, that suddenly we are getting resumes. Super cool if you sent it and are legitimately interested in a career in fiber arts!! We just can’t pay you!! Sorry for being cautious but I didn’t open any attachments just in case, we just aren’t hiring right now. Thanks for the interest and offer to help though!!

We offer BFL for blending!! (The lambs pictured are from Emily’s flock!) This farm got Emily’s son hooked on valais, so naturally we got them hooked on BFL.

🐑 Let's Talk About Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) Wool! 🧶

If you've ever wondered why fiber artists get so excited when they hear "BFL," here's why...

Bluefaced Leicester is one of the most loved longwool breeds in the fiber world.

What makes it so special?

✨ Beautiful luster – BFL has a natural shine that makes finished projects almost glow.

✨ Soft handle – While it's a longwool breed, BFL is much softer than many people expect. It's comfortable enough for next-to-skin garments while still being durable.

✨ Excellent staple length – Typically 3–6 inches, making it easy to spin whether you're a beginner or an experienced hand spinner.

✨ Strong fiber – BFL resists breaking better than many fine wools, making it perfect for socks, sweaters, shawls, and heirloom pieces.

✨ Felts beautifully – We especially love BFL for wet felting. It creates a strong, durable fabric while maintaining a soft feel, making it an excellent choice for blankets and other fiber art.

✨ A perfect blending fiber – BFL mixes exceptionally well with luxury fibers like: 🦙 Alpaca 🦬 Yak 🐇 Angora Rabbit 🐑 Fine longwool breeds

These blends add warmth, softness, texture, and beautiful natural color variation to finished projects.

One of the reasons we enjoy working with BFL is its versatility. Whether it's spun into yarn, blended into roving, or felted into a blanket, it consistently produces beautiful results.

Every breed has its strengths, and Bluefaced Leicester has earned its reputation as one of the finest all-around fiber sheep in the world.

Have you ever worked with BFL wool? We'd love to hear what you've made with it!

Be sure to wash your yarns after being mill spun! We are happy to do it for you for $2/skein or most customers choose to save money and do it themselves. But mills use a lot of spinning oils and our hands and machines are oily and gross by the end of the day, so by doing one extra step and washing your yarns you will:

-set the twist beyond what our steamer does
-clean the excess oils and grime off your beautiful yarns
-bloom your yarns
-have a more accurate weight of your yarn and gauge (we spin thinner to account for the bloom)

(Wish I had taken a before and after pic of this awesome Tunis for a local preservation parks Farm). Check out Gallant Farm Preserve and their historically accurate farm! Most of our equipment matches the same era!

🌾 What's "Vegetable Matter" in Wool?

No... it doesn't mean your sheep have vegetables stuck in their wool. 😄

In the wool world, vegetable matter (VM) refers to anything from plants that gets caught in the fleece, including:

🌾 Hay
🌾 Straw
🌾 Burrs
🌾 Grass seeds
🌾 Leaves
🌾 Small twigs

The less vegetable matter in a fleece, the easier it is to process and the higher the quality of the finished fiber.

That's one reason we spend so much time managing our sheep and their environment.

Things that help reduce vegetable matter include: ✔️ Feeding in ways that keep hay out of the fleece
✔️ Keeping bedding clean
✔️ Washing many of our sheep before shearing
✔️ Shearing at the right time
✔️ Handling fleeces carefully after shearing

For us, every little piece of hay we keep out means less work later and a cleaner, more beautiful fleece for blankets, rugs, and fiber art.

When you start working with wool, you'll hear people say, "This fleece has a lot of VM."

Now you'll know exactly what they mean! 🐑🧶

Do you try to keep vegetable matter out of your fleeces? We'd love to hear what works best for you!

🧶 Reminder that we don’t make comb top.

🌽🌿🌱 💩 This would be the step before yarn in a fully worsted mill. We are considered semi-worsted. For mills that make comb top, yes they remove 99.9% of vegetable matter. Unfortunately we can’t. We will do everything we can to skirt and pick out what we can see, but we just don’t have the man hours, employees/time or equipment to completely remove VM. So yes, what you send in is pretty much what you get back. Please skirt and pick your fleeces before sending to a mill!

🐑 🦙 🐪 📦 Join us at Michigan Fiber Festival Sunday morning Aug. 16 at 10am in the sheep barn for an interactive demo on how to prep your fleeces for milling!! We will share quality testing tips, picking, skirting, and packaging.
