A year ago I filed the paperwork. No inventory. No full product line. Just a conviction that wouldn’t leave me alone: the diaspora deserves to see itself on the things we carry when we travel.

Did you know there's a Black woman on page 26 of your U.S. passport whose legacy deserves to be celebrated? 🤎

Her name is Dr. Anna Julia Cooper — scholar, educator, activist, and the only woman quoted in the pages of the U.S. passport. She was born into slavery in Raleigh, North Carolina and went on to earn her PhD at 66 from the Sorbonne in Paris. Her words have been crossing borders with every American traveler since 2007.

In 2024, I experienced what I call my “Great Reset.”

After 20 years in marketing, I was laid off while sick with COVID and suddenly reeling from the loss of my father. In my deepest season of grief and vulnerability, I watched the job market signal loud and clear what it thought older Black women were worth.

I decided I would not wait for that market to change its mind.

Asali Origins became official one year ago yesterday. Today, on Equal Pay Day, I’m still here—building on my own terms and defining my own value.
